Can't turn on PC, Presario SR2163WM

I purchased a XON-500F8X2-201 500w power supply to upgrade my son's HP Presario SR2163WM pc to allow him to use a better graphics card. When I install the new power supply, I cannot turn on the PC with the switch on the power supply, or the case. The power supply tests out, and when I returned the original (BESTEC ATX-300-12Z REV DDR) to the PC, it works fine. Is this a motherboard compatability issue?, or a configuration issue? Or stupid user trick?

Thanks Hughv, I did check and double check the connxn to make sure they were tight.

I did the paperclip test on the PS outside of the pc, and it worked fine and its switch worked fine. But when installed in the case, and motherboard, ....nothing.

That's what makes me wonder if there is an issue with the motherboard, or VISTA, or BIOS or something that I am unaware of that makes it unresponsive to the switch on the case.

Sorry for your problems. I would suggest that you make sure the MB works with the old PSU, and if so, send the XION one back. I have 2 XION PSUs, and they give me a couple problems... If you need further advice, go ahead and ask me at [email protected] anytime.

You sound like you know what you're doing, so I expect you've made all the motherboard connections(Same as the original PS). Does the switch work when you test it? If so, it sounds like the PS is DOA. I've had bad luck with cheap power supplies.

You haven't really done a proper test. You need to know that the output voltage on all circuits is adequate, and for that you need a PS tester, or a voltmeter.
These things are inexpensive and tell you immediately whether the PS is good:
I've found them even at Office Depot.
In the past, my local shop was willing to test for free, so you may have some luck with that approach.
I'm not aware of any Vista issues with Power Supplies, so I suspect a test will find some deficiency.

Video card upgrade compatibility for compaq presario sr1900 nx with windows 7 sp1 installed

All the information for your computers motherboard can be found here:

The motherboard has a x16 PCI Express Video Card slot , so you should be able to put any PCI Express Video Card into this system. I would however refrain from putting something extremely powerful in there as you will encounter issues with the weak power supply in the system (Unless you upgrade the power supply too)

All modern video cards are PCI Express :)

My Presario SR1720NX has a blinking green light on the back near the power supply when plugged in but no power. Already replaced power supply - is my system board a goner?

Would check the switch at the front of the pc.Have had several issues with that particular switch getting pushed out on compaqs just enough to allow them not to turn on.Would also verify that all powers supply plugs are pushed in all the way.

Its really depends on the power supply. What size power supply do you have? The psu is going to be the deciding factor and weather or not you want to upgrade the psu also.

If it is the fan in the power supply, replace the power supply.
The case fan is easily replaced. Measure it (in mm) and purchase a new one. The standard fan is usually 40 mm, I think.

Tower won't turn on. There is a green light on the back near the power cord that's flashing green.

Pull the power cord out and allow it to reset. If you still have issues you may need to replace your power supply.
