Freezer unit not freezing

Found freezer had stopped cooling. emptied it out & unplugged it for 24 hours to cool compressor. plugged back in, turned unit on to medium setting. Compressor turned on for 20 seconds & then turned off.... Unit is only 5 years old.I having the exact same problem... Went to get some chicken out of the freezer and noticed that things were thawing. Have since emptied the freezer, and unplugged it. Hopefully there is an easy fix to this, as the freezer on our fridge, just isn't sufficient.

    Kevin000,

The freezer does start up again, but shuts down quickly. Usually within about 20 seconds or so.

    thanks.

These seem issue with the thermostat or the relay, you need to get both these check.
One of this is creating the problem.
Also want to know if once turned off, if you restart it will it start.

Freezer stopped after power outage

If the sides are hot, look at the defrost timer. Sounds like it has stopped running with the defrost elements on. The compressor has a safety switch on it that opens either if the compressor gets too hot or if it pulls too much current when starting. If your power flickered a lot before coming back on, that triggered the safety switch. Now that it's running normally, I wouldn't worry. The defrost timer is your problem now.

What can I do? My Woods upright freezer model F17WCE has stopped freezing. It is still cold, but not cold enough freeze.

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

How do you know you fully defrosted the freezer? You have a defrost timer and heater to do that. Unplugging your unit for a few hours may not be enough.

You need to remove the lower back wall cover. There are several screws holding it on and the rubber molding around it easily pulls out.

Up plug your unit and remove the lower back cover.

1.) Frozen Drain - Your unit goes through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. During the time your freezer shuts down for 20-30 minutes except for your light. If you have a frozen drain, the condensate builds up behind the lower back wall until the cooling(evaporator) coils become plugged up and you do not get any air flow. You may even have a solid block of ice.
Repair: Using a hair dryer (DO NOT Use Metal Objects. You may damage the coils.) slowly defrost the coils. This will take 2-3 hours.

2.) Cooling (Evaporator) Fan Failure - Assume the coils are not iced up. Is your evaporator fan running?

Check it out: With a multi-meter set to the lowest Ohms (Omega Symbol). Is the motor humming, Then it is bad and needs to get replaced.
Unplug the unit. Disconnect the motor. Put one meter lead in one connector socket and the other lead in the other motor sock. You should get a reading of "0" Ohms if the motor is good. Anything else the motor is bad and need to be replaced.

3.) Defrost Timer - Pull your unit out to access the lower back. With your unit plugged in, take a small flat head screw driver, insert it into the slot on the time. Turning clockwise one turn at a time, until the freezer shuts off. If you have turned one full cycle, then you have a bad timer.
Ok. The unit shut down except for the light. Observe the metal bar below your cooling coil. Is it hot? If not then you may have a bad defrost heater. Lets check it out - Unplug your unit. Once again with your multi-meter set on the lowest Ohms, disconnect each ends of the wire connectors. Be careful not to touch the fins on the cooling coil. They are razor sharp. The connector are hard to pull apart. Put one meter lead in one connector and the other meter lead into the other connector. If you do not get a Ohm reading between 50-250, then you have a bad defrost heater.

Substitution: 3-80405-003 Cost: $56.00
This is a glass tube with a spring in it. If it is burner or the spring is broken then you have a bad defrost heater.

4.) Refrigerant Leak or Obstruction - With the unit plugged in. Lay the lover cover the cooling coils. Close the door and wait 30 minutes. Remove the cover. Do all of the coils have a nice frost pattern? Is there a block of ice in the upper right hand corner of the cooling coil. If so you either have a refrigerant leak or an obstruction. In this case the repair will cost you $450.00-$500.00.

5.) If all of the above is good, then you may have a Bi-mel problem. In the upper right hand corner of your cooling coil there is a thermostat. This controls the temperature and compressor start-up. This may explode in the back. Check to see if it is intacted.

5.) Bad thermostat - These can not be checked for failure. If you have check all of the above this may be your problem.

Freezer does not freeze anymore

the freezer usually has the condensor coil sandwiched ilong the outer cabnet and in the back the lines come out in to the compressor compartment as a tech i have found the steel line rusts where the epoxy coating is no longer in tact so i would say you most likely have leaked out the refrigerant

I have a Artic Air White Reach In Freezer. It is not blowing cold air from he top where the cold air comes in. Freezer was at 60 degrees F. I turned the defrost switch to make sure it wasn't in...

Is the freezer itself getting cold.To blow cold air.the freezer should get cold/friezed.the cold air blows from freezer to fridge side.first the freezer side gets cold, then when the freezer side gets enough cool to its set cooling temperature, at that time the defrost cycle starts. In defrost cycle the fan in the freezer starts running and the cool air from freezer starts going to fridge side. There is a ventilation passage between fridge and freezer from where this cool air passes.---------------- If in your case, the freezer is getting proper cold, but its not blowing cold air from freezer to fridge, then possibility is that, there is a blockage in ventilations. But if ventilation its clear, then its defrost problem.First try manual defrost reset procedure. The procedure is as follows: ---- First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. Then its defrost board problem. ------------------------- BUT if in your case, the freezer section itself is not getting cold, then the problem is compressor related. The compressor is the part which cools the freezer frost. In the compressor, there is a refrigerant to cool the freezer. If the compressor gets weak or the refrigerant gets low, then it will not cool the freezer, if the freezer is not cool then it will blow warm air from freezer to fridge, in defrost cycle. In that case, the compressor is faulty and its the cause of problem.------------ So you will have to first check , that is your freezer getting cold or not.as per that you can start the troubleshooting.------------------

You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

It seems the my freezer is not cooling down. When I set it up, as the instructed by the freezer manual, I turned the temperature setting to level 4. Then after waiting 24 hours, I adjusted the setting to...

I would unplug it and leave it set level. When you tilt it some of the oil in the compressor can get up into the upper pare. in some cases if the motor can't move it will either burn up or burn out the starting capacitor or coil. Plug it in again the next day and see what happens. Small freezers may take a long time to cool down and they need something in them to cool. Put pans of water or something in it and see if it will get cold enough to freeze them

My Kenmore Upright Freezer Model 25326432100 flashed "ER."

My freezer was purchased in February, 2004. It is a self defrosting freezer but ice has started forming along the bottom shelf and back wall. Also, after cleaning the freezer the other day it has stopped clycing. The freezer will stop running only if I turn it down to the #1 setting and then it will not come back on. If I turn it up to a higher setting the compressor will not stop running. It ran for over 24 hours and would not cycle unless I turned it off or set it at the #1 setting. When I unplugged it and pulled it away from the wall, there was a green water spot the size of a dinner plate underneath the freezer. Help!! Very Unhappy this freezer is only 6 years old. S in Phila.

Left door open, closed next day, but only blowing cool air now

You will need to turn the unit off and let it completely unthaw. There is frost that builds up in the ducts and behind the panels when the door is left open that will cause the unit to not cool or circulate where needed.

Used Kenmore freezer won't get cold enough

If it is running but not cooling enough the problem is in the sealed system.

If you started it up just after hauling it home it may have be moved around enough to get oil in the systems smaller tubing causing problems. Unplug the unit for 24 hours and let it sit. Try it again for 24 hours and see if it cools.

If not this means either there is a refrigerant (freon) leak in the system or a restriction causing the refrigerant to not flow properly.

Either one are an expensive repair. and will require a professional to look at.

Freezer Problem

If it started to cool again the compressor was running. Check the condenser and make sure it is clean. Provide as much air movement through the garage as possible . 100 degrees is a high temperature to be operating a refrigerator in.
