Question about KitchenAid KHMS145KSS Microwave Oven

2 Answers

I have a Kitchenaid KHMS145KSS-1 Microwave inbuilt oven. The fan up top is making a rattling sound. I am usually fairly handy but I can't see how to get to the fan. Do I have to drop the whole microwave oven down from it's overhead holder to get to the fan? Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice so far.

Do you have a repair manual for this unit and if so could you copy the instructions for unit removal - in particular do you have to undo the two very sturdy brass bolts that hang from the cupboard above the unit?

    Best regards
    Clive

Before carrying out ant repairs, please discharge the high voltage capacitor of your microwave. Use a metal ( not the shiny chrome type ) screw driver with a insulated handle to short across ( touch both at the same time ) the terminals of the high voltage capacitor to discharge it. With the microwave unpluggeI have a Kitchenaid KHMS145KSS-1 - a4001ef.jpga common way to do this--

--Remove the vent fan hood
--Remove the display control panel by removing the screw
--Take pictures of all the connections behind the control panel.
--Unhook all connections
--Remove the connections to fan
--Remove and replace the fan

Please do accept this solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

YES THE EXHAUST FAN IS INSTLLED ABOVE THE UNIT AND THE MICROWAVE WILL NEED TO REMOVED TO SERVICE THE FAN MOTOR, WHICH IS WHAT YOU WILL BE REPLACING.

Fan wont turn off

Is it the vent blower or the magnetron cooling motor. if it is the blower then it could be a bad thermal switch that is designed to come on if the bottom surface gets too hot. or a bad relay on the control board. last it could be a bad touch pad. the magnetron cooling fan could be a bad door interlock switch or relay on the control board.

You don't. If it's doing that, there's something wrong with it. It needs to be replaced.

Safe to use a microwave that is making a loud rattling sound?

It's not a good idea to continue to use it when it's making an unusual noise.
It may be arcing, which can lead to further failure or a fire, or it may be a defective stirrer or fan ,which can lead to uneven cooking or further failure.
$360 for a service call? Are you in Alaska or on Mars? That's insane. Maybe you can contact another servicer in your area?

Rattling coming from top grill on Kitchenaid microwave

the gril at the top (above the door) usually comes off with a couple of screws or just pulls off .. on some you have to take the cabinet apart ..... inside you might find a flat filter put in at a slant .. its often a grease and smell filter that contains activated charcoal .. when it gets clogged then it can rattle around as air tries to get around it .. you can replace it or just leave it out ..

Rattling Fan Noise

If I had to bet, I would say the fan blade assembly is loose on the fan motor shaft.

If so, a spot of super glue where they meet will usually take care of that.

If that's not it, it should be investigated.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs properly, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

After you look into this, if you still need help, please write back with more details.
