Yes, various softwares like the ones that usually come with the camera, or others like Pinnacle (cheap and functional) can let you see the video frame by frame and capture or save a frame separately as a photo - try right clicking on the frame you want. Of course programs like Adobe Premier are excellent for this too but very pricey. Unfortunately, if the snaps are part of the video, they will be low res and email quality only under normal circumstances. It may be printable up to 4x6 maximum usually (but a bit choppy). For the best results, switch the camera to photo mode and shoot to the memory card for the cameras best quality results. Or use a still camera. You can always do both or use the software to add photos to your video edits. Hope this helps...

There are two solutions, one, buy a mini dv tape player. They are kind of expensive, but you will be able to get your information off your tapes. Second, buy a used, working mini dv camcorder on ebay and use it to get your information off your tapes. A five year old camcorder is not work fixing.

Fire wires are available for almost all cameras, they are easy to get at the local electronics store or on line, I buy mine through ebay. All you need is the model number of the camera and the salesperson can locate the cable you need, or better yet take the camera with you and let them match it up for you. try radio shack. Most computers have the software for the transfers already installed, there are a ton of software options out there to use just look for one that fits your price range. I use Nero and it is available on line or in stores. you can't record without the tape, there are no hard drives in this camera to store video. You can hook the camera up and record directly to the computer through the fire wire. The tapes can be used over and over again till they start to wear down, but you should easily uses these 10 times or more before getting an new one. I doubt any store will take a trade in, maybe a small family owned store could work with you, or maybe a pawn shop. The laptop probably will not hold a lot of video in the memory but you can burn these on to a DVD disc using either windows or Nero.

The dcr-hc38 is a minidv camcorder that usea a minidv tape. There is no "delete" on tape camcorders. You simply record over the tape. Or if you want to get rid of a recorded section on the tape you dont want, find out the exact minutes/seconds display of the section you dont want and just record over the section with the lens cap on.  To fully edit the tape, you will need to upload to your computer and use the editing software that came with your camcorder.

Hi, i have a sony z1...

I assume that you can see live view to record on mini dv cassette but can't see recorded image in playback.

Let me know when you playback mini dv cassette, does time counter run time intervals or stays blank on LCD / eye finder?

If this happens, you have dirty / clogged video heads in camera and need to use good quality mini dv head cleaning cassette to clean heads. This will resolve problem.

Need further help, let me know please.
Thank you.

Record button doesn't function

You may want to check the record lockout safety switch located on the tape. This button can get moved by accident and the camera will refuse to record on that tape. Also, be sure the camera is in "video" mode, not "photo" mode. Some of Canons camcorders have a digital still camera mode which stops the camcorder from functioning because the photos are being recorded to a memory card and not your tape, please check this swithc as well. Good luck. Joe Weibel

Only DV connections (IEEE1394 connections) are possible when connecting your camcorder to a computer. DV connections (IEEE1394 connections) Your camcorder can be connected to a computer equipped with an IEEE1394 (DV) terminal or OHCI-compliant IEEE1394 capture board. You can transfer taped recordings (digital video signals) to the computer by connecting the camcorder to the computer. Use the editing software supplied with your computer/capture board to transfer video recordings from tape to the computer. If you are using a computer running Windows XP, you can also record the video simultaneously on your computer's hard disk and on the tape using DV-PC Recorder Software. You can download the DV-PC Recorder Software from Canon's DV-PC Recorder Web site. Making the connection Connect the camcorder to the computer as shown in the figure below. The computer's IEEE1394 (DV) terminal is either a 4-pin or a 6-pin type, depending on the computer used. Use either the CV-150F (4-pin - 4-pin) or the CV-250F (4-pin - 6-pin) DV cable (sold separately), whichever fits your computer's terminal. Precautions (1) There are cases where the connection may not work correctly, depending on your system specifications/settings. (2) If the computer freezes while you have the camcorder connected to it , disconnect and reconnect the DV cable. If the problem persists, take the following actions. (2-1) Disconnect the DV cable from the camcorder and the computer, and then turn off the camcorder and the computer. (2-2) Turn the camcorder and the computer back on and then reconnect them with the DV cable. (3) Your camera cannot be used with DV NETWORK SOFTWARE (DV Messenger).
