Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

Controllers freak out

I have been having problems with the left joystick on one of the controllers. It seems to stick in the up position even when the joystick is in the neutral or down position. If I press down on the joystick the problem clears up until I boot up the console again. The right joystick doesn't seem to be affected.

Put rubbing alcohol on a Q tip and rub the joystick with it for a few seconds then put everything back together and it should work fine.

Sounds like its time to buy a new controller, You could spend hours trouble shooting this one and for the price of a replacement its really not worth the time playing around with it and trying to repair it.

You could try carefully disassembling it and carefully cleaning all the buttons and components etc to prevent the sticking problem then carefully reassambling it, Like I said it really depends on whether you think its worth it considering the cost of a new replacement controller and the time involved in doing the fix, What sort of controller is it?

There should be a calibration tool to configure the joystick.
You move the cursor to each of the corner and click the fire button and possibly the center position as well.

You might clean out the registry of any left over values. Try it on another machine if it still does it, its something mechanical inside maybe stuck. I suppose its out of warranty? You cant fly with those stickers anyways if that's what you do. Scourer the junk shops for an old MS Sidewinder, they are still the best stickes ever made.

Right Joystick. . .

I had this same problem with my 360 controller (after modding it, but the solution should be the same..) If you pull up on any 360 joystick it will stick the same way.

The quickest fix would be to take some sandpaper on the inside of where the joystick touches the controller shell, sand it down just enough so the joystick is moving smoothly.

More professional ways would be to cut the little piece of metal that sticks out and goes into the joystick. Just a very small amount, too much will make it hard to press the right thumbstick button.
You could also try some old fashioned grease, just a little bit on the inside, nothing noticeable from the outside.

Also make sure the controller is put back together right, I've taken apart many 360 controllers and sometimes joysticks stick when there's a wire in the wrong place and the shell won't close all the way. (The rumble motors particularly).
Hope this helped!
