Just install new hard drive in my laptop....old one frozen. i have an activation key for windows 8.1 pro. how do i install new operating system?

Boot from your installation disc. Insert the installation disc into your optical; drive, and reboot your computer. Normally a computer boots from the hard drive first, so you will need to adjust some settings in your BIOS in order to boot from the disc drive. You can enter the BIOS by hitting the designated Setup key during the boot process. The key will be displayed on the same screen as your manufacturer's logo.
  • Common Setup keys include F2, F10, F12, and Del/Delete.
  • Once you are in the Setup menu, navigate to the Boot section. Set your DVD/CD drive as the first boot device. If you are installing from a USB drive, make sure that the drive is inserted and then select it as the first boot device.
  • Once you've selected the correct drive, save your changes and exit Setup. Your computer will reboot.

Get message internal hard disk drive not

This may mean that your computer is trying to boot from a non-bootable drive. Try hitting f12 when you restart the computer and select which drive would have your OS on it. You want to change the boot sequence to diskette drive as your 1st choice. The order should be Diskette Drive, Internal HDD, USB storage Device, CD/DVD drive.

I need to press a key on my keyboard to start factory recovery

Hi and welcome to Fixya!

In order to revert the machine back to its factory setting, you need to have the recovery disk (if you don't have it, call the warranty support line of e-machines so they can provide it to you).

To restore Windows from your recovery discs, you will need to
insert the first backup disc and enable the F12 Boot Menu via the BIOS Setup
Utility.
1 Turn on your computer and insert the first system recovery disc into the
optical disc drive. Restart your computer.
2 During startup when the eMachines logo shows, press the F2 key to enter
BIOS Setup, where you can set system parameters.
3 Use the left and right arrow keys to select the Main submenu.
4 Use the up and down arrow keys to select F12 Boot Menu.
5 Use the F5 or F6 key to change F12 Boot Menu to Enabled.
6 Press the ESC key to enter the Exit submenu, press the ENTER key to Exit
Saving Changes. Press the ENTER key again to select Yes. The system will
reboot.
7 After rebooting, when the eMachines logo shows, press the F12 key to
open the Boot Menu. Here you can select which device to boot from.
8 Use the arrow keys to select the IDE1*, then press the ENTER key. Windows
will be installed from the recovery disc.
9 Insert the second recovery disc when prompted, then follow the onscreen
prompts to complete the restore.
10 Remove the recovery disc from the optical drive once the restore is
complete. Do this before rebooting your computer.

Hope this helps!

When I restart with the boot disk I made (or the intstallation disk) the computer starts up normally. I am not being prompted to scrub it. Help!

you need to change the boot order of the computer to boot from cd instead of hard drive.

When you first start up the computer you should see a message to press to enter setup the most common keys are:
  • Delete
  • F1
  • F2
  • F3
  • F5
  • F10
  • Escape
  • Insert
  • Control + Escape
  • Alt + Escape
  • Control + Alt + Escape
  • Control + Alt + Enter
Once you've entered setup you should be able to find a selection something to the effect of boot order chage the fist boot selection or primary boot device to the CD rom so that the computer will boot from the boot disk instead of the hard drive

I Have an old HP pavillion model N3410. I am trying to access BIOS or change boot order but it won't let me. I've tried pressing f2 during reboot but it goes straight to normal windows me startup.Also...

Turn the computer off.
Hold down any key on the keyboard, and turn the computer on.
You might get a "keyboard error, press <something> to enter BIOS SETUP".

Also, instead of F2, try F1 or F10 or F11 or F12 or DEL.

Entering bios setup

Occasionally, most computer owners will need to access BIOS on their computers in order to change or update the computer's most basic operations; such as memory and boot order.

Different computer manufacturers will have you press different buttons to access BIOS depending on the model you have. For example, on my laptop, I press F12 to enter the BIOS setup utility.

Here's how to figure out how to enter your computers BIOS setup utility. 1
Turn your computer on or shut it down and restart it if it is already on.
  • Step 2 As soon as the computer starts up, watch for a message that informs you about which button you will need to push in order to enter setup, aka BIOS.
  • Step 3 The opportunity to press the correct key to enter BIOS passes by quickly, so you need to find that key and press it before the computer moves on to the next stage of booting. If you miss your chance, just restart the computer and try again.

You can always access BIOS, even on computers that dont have an operating system installed. This is because BIOS is part of your computer's motherboard hardware and has nothing to do with Windows, Linux or whatever operating system you may be using.

    Wont start up

Try pressing escape and setting up the local hard disk (C:\) as the boot media. This (if there is an operating system installed) will boot to the hard disk. Try that and see if it works for you bud.

If that doesn't work, try putting your recovery disc into the CD-Rom drive then restarting. It should load up the CD's software and you can go from there.

Try these solutions and see if they work, If they don't, simply reply and we'll go into a little more detail with figuring out what happened.

Can't enter BIOS setup with F2

Try using another application that has a use for the F2 key. I'm not totally convinced that your keyboard is good. It is possible for just one key to fail. Happens quite often.
