Question about Brother MFC-5440CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

How do I get the scanner to properly scan pencil drawings with precise shading? I have tried to darken it with the program but the shading still doesn't show up even close to the way it actually looks on the paper. This is for a class that my husband is taking. Thanks

You have to configure the scanner for the maximum number of shades of grey, usually 256, or more,
if available, rather than black and white, as it apparently is presently set.

If you need more assistance with this, just leave a comment, with the name of the program you use with
your scanner and any other helpful information that will help me help you.

Sorry, Ms, but if pencil would not scan, you would see nothing in any part of your pencil scan, save dark ink.

Government scanners are not usually used for sketches, but when they are, as in the case of identity circulars or courtroom sketches, they are set for 256 shades of grey, rather than black and white as they are set when scanning forms.

Supply me the information as to your ocr or scanning software and I will assist you further.

may be you have written the words in darker ink and drawing might have been in pencil! scanner usually recognises dark areas and adjusts the picture based on it! make sure you darken the drawing as much as those words!

Cannot get it to scan black and white pencil drawing

Pencil drawings are 'weak', you need to adjust the contrast to get good output. Try different options.

Bad contrast with scanner

Last things first: NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE.

That's the way HP does things. There are no rheostats or pots to adjust. It's all done electronically now, with chips and things.

You never said how it does with color or greyscale photos or drawings.

As for the RGB=(64,64,64), that's about right for the scan picture settings and the mixed (text and graphics) setting, and is particularly true for color picture settings. Have you tried using the setting for drawings (or line art), specifically greyscale drawings? Usually the greyscale lineart or drawing setting will render black text. You might also try scanning with the settings set for Text. If the greyscale drawing settings or greyscale text settings do not produce black text, try reinstalling your software and drivers.

If the contrast stays the same for all settings after reinstalling the software and drivers, and if it doesn't scan color and greyscale pictures correctly, then it sounds like your scanner is going bad.

As for the scans you've already done, you can darken the text by taking it into a photo editor, such as Paint Shop Pro or Photo Shop, and adjust the contrast and brightness to get the effect you desire.

Problem with my A3 flatbed scanner

The preview, if it is thumbnail picture, it is difficult ti decipher. Dont worry about that. Pencil drawings are very light and needs higher contrast. Try a few options and you can select the best one. If you scan a pencil drawing in grey, it may appear light and also file size will be bigger.

Scanned documents are very light

I have found that when scanning b/w documents, its helpful to start with a black and white copy, not a grayscale, pen written, or printed form a printer in grayscale mode copy, but a true black and white on the copier or fax copy. The scanner doesnt read shades of black so well and when scanning multiple page documents, my pixma tends to scan in lightly. I havent found a piece of software to do just this, batch darken what has been scanned (at least not for free). Copying before scanning is the work around. Hope this helps everyone who's had this problem. It also doesnt hurt to darken what your scanning down a notch when copying

If the lines look like little steps, maybe broken is segments off by about the thickness of a pencil line, try this. Most likely it's the scanner. You can try calabrating it by doing the following. press in order. Menu #1934. You will see a T pop up to the right side of "Ready to Copy". Then press machine status, then scroll until you find maintenance. May be under system settings. When you find maintenance, press enter, then scroll to Shading Adjustment. Or depending on software version, Adjust shading. Place 5 sheets of paper on the glass,, press enter, then when is says "Adjust Shading?" press enter again. Let it print out the sheet. Then try a copy. If that doesn't help, the scanner itself will probably need replacing.
The scanner is the issue. The segments of what is called the CCD are not working properly.
Once you adjust shading, if that doesn't work, the scanner will need to be replaced.

The shading alignment is a software alignment fix and unplugging the unit will solve this problem. You will have to do a software shading alignment to correct your problem. I've lost my notes while moving and I can't give you the procedure for doing this.I hope this helps a little.
