Question about Intel Pentium 4, 2.53 GHz (SL6S2)

2 Answers

My Pentium 4 2.53GHz computer is running slow

I have a Pentium 4 2.53 GHz computer with 0.99 GB or RAM. When I bought it in 2002, it ran super fast. Now it is runs very slow. I have defragged the hard drive, cleaned up the temporary files, and have cleaned up the hard drive as much as possible. I am not considering over-clocking it because I do not believe that my cooling system will handle the heat generated.

It gets so slow that when I send a file to the printer, the computer stops until the printer finishes printing.

I run iTunes, Outlook 2007, MS apps, and IE browsers. Outlook 2007 slows down my computer so much that I open it to check/send email then close it. It takes 1 minute for MS Excel and MS Word to open when I use them.

I appreciate your help.

Thank you,

In response to provide more information, I have a Mercury board with an Intel 845GE chipset. I appreciate the recommendations of adding more memory so please let me know how much I will need. Additionally, I have gone through and un-checked all of the unwanted programs/applications from starting on startup and un-installed them. Afterwhich I defraged my computer but it did not improve my computer's performance.

I am interested in hearing your other recommendations.

    Thank you for your assistance

search the internet and find a good registry cleaner like cclean.

    back up your registry first.

second take a look in the system. see how much page file se set at. you may want to increase that just a little.

lastly make sure you have minumum of 25% free HD space.

Which of the following chipsets, and please specify the board, do you have.

Otherwise, I want to thank you for your complete exposition of your problem./

You will need more memory and there are other recommendations I will have when you provide me
with the specifications as requested.

Here are the recommended chipsets for the processor you specified.

Intel 845GE • Intel 845PE • Intel 845GV • Intel 865P • Intel 845E • Intel 845G • Intel 850 • Intel 850E

You have 2 slots and a max memory of 2GB for any board with that chipse on it, and I have checked all the boards, even non-Intel boards for the
specs, so here is what you need.

    1GB Intel Motherboard PC2700 DDR333 nonECC DIMM (p/n INTEL-1GB-PC2700-D)
    US $48.99

Get Two of the above and upgrade your Graphics processor card so
that you get full use of the chip you have, and if your memory stick

is identical, (i.e. you don't have two 512MB sticks in each of the two
slots, but have ONE 1 Gig Stick of memory in only one of the slots,

then you don't have to replace both but just buy one, and if you upgrade
your Graphics Processor to one with a good deal of memory on the board
like maybe 128-512Megs, then you will not have only 99% of your memory to use for your programs, which require a lot of disk and memory swapping.)

You couldn't hurt yourself by installing a larger hard drive than you could

have purchased when you bought this system in 2002 for a lot less
    per GB.

Hi,
overclocking will kill it off in no time at all, never over-clock, unless your testing a product,
on SOHO systems, they are not built to over-clock really, over-clocking, it will burn out in a 3rd of the lifecycle.
there are a few things you could do,instead.

Backup old data you have on it to an external Hdd, then remove the copy's off the Pc,
use less Applications at once.if not using, close it
Checkout software like Rambooster,
Add bigger Hdd, Add more RAM.
Increase the size of the page file.
In advanced system performance, adjust for better performance,
type MSCONFIG in the run box, in the startup tab, un-tick unwanted/needed items
(( must know what your un-ticking )) or possible DISASTERS.
Defrag twice on the trot,
get rid of anything un-used, go to your programmes, un-install old "un-used" programmes,
( Don't delete everything in sight )
be very specific, but check all over the system,
delete duplicates, update the O/S, update virus sign, run scan check all good.
system should be all good now,

Hope this helps
Regards

I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 24A. The videos that I run from YouTube and other such sites do not run smoothly. They are jerky/choppy. What could be the reason. Please do not tell give me complicate

Anytime your streaming videos are playing but not running smoothly, you either have a slow internet connection and aren't downloading fast enough to keep the data streaming OR you don't have enough RAM to keep up with the streaming data and everything else that's going on in the background. Check your internet connection speed first. If you have a good download speed then add RAM to your pc. (You could also try clearing cache on your browser)

Computer runs slow . I have a dell 2350 pentium. 256mb ram running windows xp. C drive has 11.7 gb used and 16.8 free.the machine doesnt respond as quickly as it once did

Computers slow down, even after a short time, there is a little guide that will help to speed up, and keep it safe and secure
http://www.fixya.com/support/r5272277-secure_clean_computers
I would also advise a little more memory, but i have ran a few pc's with 256mb ram and they where still usable.
Try ebay for older types of memory

Dear Guys,Windows Vista is very slow.

well first of all vista is slow and ur system may be a bit to old for vista, but thats cause vista is stupid, see vista will do ten things to do one thing! make sense see vista is just a pretty version of xp, Your computer is fast but also you installing a horrible OS on it, just stick with XP man unless you really liked vista then just a newer computer will solve this, just stick to XP.

Internet surfing

yes its true. computer specs gives a big factor on internet connection. even though you have a fast speed broadband but your computer is low ed. it will lead to a low opening page like when your browsing with a high definition web page but your processor, memory and graphics coudnt cooperate well to the connection. thats what we called frame per seconds or fps.

Upgrading my laptop processor

When you're running an average load, start Task Manager and view the performance tab. If the amount of free RAM is low, then definately upgrade your RAM. Plus, nowadays it's really cheap to upgrade ram.
As far as upgrading your processor, that can get a little tricky and expensive.
Also, what do you mainly use your computer for, and what operating system do you use?
