How long ago did you start getting this message? Are you using Windows XP or Vista? On a new system, you normally have 30 days to activate Windows XP or Vista. If you have gone beyond that 30 day window, your only option is to make sure you're on a wired/wireless network, register and activate windows.

No, just call Microsoft for the activation code.
Windows activation: (888) 571-2048. You will need your serial number for your REGISTERED windows version.

Or see this article:

Click "yes, I want to activate" -- a telephone-number should be displayed. Telephone Microsoft, at that number, and they will help you "activate" your copy of Windows.

The only other option is to take the original "System Restore" CD-ROM disks, and 25-character Microsoft product-key, and reinstall Windows.

Please go here to the Microsoft validation website.
Try to validate online by clicking the Validate Windows button. Be patient, install the Active X component on your browser and allow it to run, etc.
If this doesn't work, you can access the Support actions from the same site to troubleshoot your validation.
Finally, there is an option available to activate windows by phone if this is a new installation and all else fails.
