Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 and it won't boot up. When I turn it on the green power light comes on and hard drive activity light flashes however no fans come on, the screen doesn't show the Dell logo or anything at all (stays blank). The diagnostic lights on the back are Yellow/green flashing; Yellow; Green; Green. Can anyone help? Have tried removing and reinstalling the memory cards, disconnecting from the power supply and then restarting.

Thanks Deminemi. Dell support can't help until Monday as I am out of warranty. The fan doesn't start at all and the screen stays blank.

Not getting anything - don't have video card I can use. But given the fan isn't working and the computer isn't making the usual start up noises think its more likely to be the motherboard rather than a video card?

Okay, well, I was going based on your original problem. You said you had hard drive activity and led light on. If that was a MOBO problem, you wouldn't even get that much. If you're not getting anything at all, then it could also be a PSU issue. Do you have anyway of testing the power supply?

  • Jerry May 11, 2010

I think what I need to know also is, are you getting any video at all? It is possible that your onboard video may have gone out. Have you tried or do you have an external PCI video card you could try?

dell support might be a bit more helpful in this field, and likely it's a hardware issue but just some diagnostic questions:

when you press the power button does the fan start and then stop ?

if you have the monitor on do you see anything at all ? or is it just completely blank ?

my guess would be that if you aren't seeing anything at all you have some sort of short on the motherboard

if you are seeing something but it disappears after a second or 2 either your CPU fan is broken ( which is about 10$ and a little elbow grease)  which is causing an overheat and shutdown or something may not be plugged in properly.

in either case i would get on the line with dell support, they are pretty quick and fairly knowledgeable , at the very least they can let you know what the lights mean

I would have to disagree with jerry, while that seems reasonable if the motherboard fan isn't running at all then whether or not the video card is ok is somewhat irrelevant.
I would agree somewhat though, i think the PSU might be a good thing to check to see if it is functional.
when you power it on does the CPU fan start or shudder at least ? that would be my first guess for a problem if you had been having any problems recently

Dell demension 4600c power light ok, hard drive light not on

sounds like hard drive dead or your boot files corrupted and your hard drive has no input power. could be power unit weak or your hard drive could have died..they do wear out.
do you hear any fans spinning? there are fans to keep your pc cool. one big one for chasis and one small on over processor chip(heatsink). if the smaller fan(especially) does not spin then PC will not boot because chip will heat up and break if no fan. system will protect itself from this by not starting. open chasis and check if small fan is working. if not this is cheap fix. if it spins then hard drive or graphics card may be bad, which gets more expensive. shop will charge average of $75 dollars to analyze-just to tell you what is wrong, not to fix it.

My dell dimension 4600 doesn't come on. When i press to on button I get an orange light on the power light ( left hand one ) then nothing happens. can you help

Possibly a faulty power supply?

Faulty Power cable?

Faulty Video Card?

Try replacing each of these in turn , remove all components and try to boot with the basics - 1 stick of memory, no drives, just video

Then add 1 drive

Then add another stick of memory

Keep going till you work out whats stopping it from starting.

Screen will not come on hard drive light no light checked power supply is ok

Things to check:
  1. Power led on the front of the tower, it should be solid green when on. Flashing Amber is generally an indication of a bad power supply inside the tower
  2. Power LED Solid AMBER indicates system is not finishing the power on self test (POST) and you remove all connections from the tower except power and try turning on again. If no change, remove all PCI and PCI-E cards from system, try again, no change replace motherboard.
  3. On the back of the tower are 4 diagnostic LEDs near the ps2 ports marked ABCD, after the POST, during a normal boot the will flash in several sequences and with boot is finished all 4 should be green. If they stop an a different pattern, then that indicates a failure Yellow Yellow Green Green indicate bad RAM for example
  4. If the LEDs on front and back are Green then the system appears to be booting but the monitor display is not functional

Can't boot up Dell 5100 Dimension, amber light flashes

When you mean the amber light, is that the blinking hard drive access light or the power light? Different cases have different colors on it. Mine has blue and green lights.

If you see the boot screen (bios) and then after it goes to boot, does it blink and hang?

This could be a simple operating system issue, hard drive or hardware/motherboard issue. If you could provide more information, that would help.

Computer will not turn on

  • Blinking Amber/yellow: Initial state of LED at power up.
Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active.
If the hard drive LED is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced.
If the hard drive LED is on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed.

Dell Dimension 4600 stalls during boot

Turn the computer's power on.
Immediately put the original Windows XP CD into the drive.
Tell the computer to boot from the CD (not from the hard-drive).
Does it start to boot from the CD?
Do you get as far as the "repair/install" boot-screen?
If so, your basic hardware is OK, and turn your computer off,
rather than choosing "repair" or "install".
Then, it's probably either the hard-drive that is failing,
or the installed copy of Windows XP is fuddle-duddle-ucked up, so that it cannot finish the "Windows startup" processing.

Dell wont start up

On the back of the chassis, there are 4 LEDs above the PS2 connections marked ABCD what do they indicate? During the boot process the lights normally flash on and off green, when the boot process is complete, they should all be green GGGG.

If any are Amber then they are indicating a power on self test (POST) failure. AAGG is bad memory for example.

Post the indications
