Question about ASUS A8Jm Notebook

Boot up, lines on black screen

Problem first arose with ASUS A8Jm laptop failing to turn on. Then after resolving this issue by removing the battery for 15 minutes, the laptop would boot up and then hang with multi-coloured lines on a black screen. Thanks in advance for any insight, tips into this incredibly frustrating problem!

It appears that you have a video card or inverter problem. I would probably place my bet on a bad inverter. You may want to visit the Acer forums aor talk to their tech support about parts.

Temitope, Hard reset. Open computer, remove battery, hold power button down (((1 minute))), reinsert battery, reassemble laptop, push/hold power button a couple seconds.
2nd fix, try to boot laptop without hdd.(hard drive). Remove the hdd, then turn on the laptop.. then it can get into the bios.. reset the bios to the default setting, turn off the laptop, and then turn it on again with hdd reinstalled. This seems to be what works in the forums with this issue found in Asus laptops. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Press F8 when you turn on the computer and from the list of options select safe mode and boot into safe mode when you are on the desktop screen go to the device manager ( you can use this path : start-run-devmgmt.msc) in the device manager go to display adaptors right click it and uninstall it.
after that restart the computer.

if this doesnot work again boot to safe mode and try to do a system restore (start-all programs-accesories-accesibility-system tools-system restore)
select a date when your system was working fine, that should fix it.

Hi,

You can try the following steps:

1. Unplug the power from the laptop and remove the battery then press the power button of the laptop for 15 seconds

2. Put the battery back in, turn on the laptop without plugging the power to the laptop (If this didn't resolve the issue)

3. Remove the battery and press the power button of the laptop for 15 seconds, after that, plug the power cord and turn on the laptop (if this didn't resolve the issue)

4. Remove the power cord and press the power button of the laptop for 15 seconds, disconnect the Hard drive and turn on the laptop (If this didn't resolve the issue) reconnec the hard drive

5. Remove the Optical Drive and turn on the laptop (If this didn't resolve the issue) reconnect the optical drive

6. Remove the memory chip, if you have 2 memory chips installed in the 2 memory slots (remove both of them) now test each one of the memory to each slots turning on the laptop. (If this didn't resolve the issue) Put the memory chip back in

7. Reseat the CPU and try to make sure that it's installed properly. Turn on the laptop and test if it's gonna work (If this didn't resolve the issue)

8. Reseat the power cords coming from the power supply of the laptop and test the laptop. (If this didn't resolve the issue)

9. Disconnect everything and just leave the CPU installed and turn on the laptop.

10. If all else fails, there's a big possibility that the problem may be with the power supply or the motherboard of the laptop.

(Note: you may try to clean your computer if there is a large amount of dust. You may try to remove the CMOS battery)

Asus laptop - screen went blank and will not turn back on

I'm assuming your screen shows nothing at all, even the bios or boot screen as it turns on.

If you can hook it up to an external monitor then your video adapter is working. Try using the vga output on the laptop. If it doesn't show anything use you display select feature. I'm not sure what button it is on your laptop but on mine it is Fn+F8 (look for a button that shows a laptop and/or a rectangle).

If you can see it with an external monitor, you should try to uninstall and reinstall the video adapter. After you reboot the computer hopefully it will work.

However, if it still does not work, you will probably need to reseat the monitor cable. Do this by opening the screen panel. on the back is a flat cable tat plugs in to the LCD. This is usually covered by tape. Carefully remove the tape, unplug the cable and plug the cable back in. Don't forget to replace the tape!
I have fixed two computers in the last two weeks by reseating this cable.

Hope this helps and good luck!
