Question about GE GSS25LGM Side by Side Refrigerator

Refrigerator side walls are hot

Whirlpool 3VET19ZK 2 door 560Liter (19.7Cu Ft) frost free refrigerator bought in 1994.
Freezer is at 5 degF and the food section hovers around 45degF and the outside side walls at the divider hot to the touch all the time. I checked the panel behind the freezer, no ice build up. Fan is working fine. When I put my hand in front of the vent in the food section, I don't feel any cold air blowing in.

What is the likely problem and how can it be fixed?

All advice and help appreciated.

lojacksdad, I live in Pune, India. Ambient temp. in fridge area is around 86F at 9.30am in Apr/May. External moisture control switch is in off position. Yesterday at abt 11am, I switched off the unit, reduced load in the freezer and food section and set the freezer at C and refrigerator at 6. This morning at 9am, freezer is at -4F but the refrigerator is at 46.4F. I noticed chilled air flow in the freezer (like white smoke) and a slightly improved airflow in the food section. Sides are still hot.

The 15 year old refrigerator has given me trouble free service except for the rotary compressor dying in 2007. It was replaced by a Matsushita reciprocating compressor. The original rotary comp. had a cooling fan which became noisy a few months ago and the appliance repairer disconnected it stating that it was not necessary with the new compressor. I notice from the schematic that the fan blows air to the condensor and the rotary comp. Any chance the disconnection of the fan is causing this since the ambient temp is so high?

The original condenser fan motor (Emerson brand) makes a huge racket when turned on. Motor bearings may have worn out according to my appliance repair guy. He's taken it to see if he can fix it. Everyone in agreement that the condenser needs to be cooled. Will try it out by Monday and report back. Thanks.

Hi lojacksdad, Managed to get a small floor fan on Tuesday to cool the condenser. The next day the temp began moving down and by Wed it was steady in the recommended 2-4 deg C range. No luck locally with replacement for the original fan motor. Alternative is to fix a mini fan on the wall behind the refrigerator. On Fri I with the ambient temp going down, I switched off the fan. Will check if 2-4 deg is maintained. If not, fan is the only solution. Thanks a zillion for the advice.

Hi, I have been in the refrigeration business for over 15 years. I also own a Whirlpool friege with the exact same problem.

a. The condensor fan HAS to work. That fan is not to cool the compressor, it is in place to cool the condensor. If your condensor fan does not work, your compressor may trip.
b. Those emerson fans make a racket because the bearings wear out very quickly. Actually, the bearing does not wear out, the shaft wears out.
c. You can fix this by either fitting a small fan to cool the condensor OR
d. You can buy a similar motor from Whirlpool but they are VERY expensive OR
e. You can buy a similar motor from Micro Instrument Company, 8, Industrial Area Ambala Cantonement, Ambala 133001, India and turn the fan to fit in the space.

you have to have a fan on that compressor to cool when you have temps that you are having .
put a floor fan on the compressor let it blow on it for the day watch the difference

Good day,
If it is a conventional refrigerator, there should be a cooling plate on the top back of the wall in the food section.
Assuming the door fits and closes properly, and the light goes out when the door closes, the plate described above should have a frost pattern on it. That is what cools the bottom fresh food section.
If left on for plus 12 hours normal cooling should exist.
If the plate is not frosted, and the machine runs constantly, you have a freon leak with no real practical repair possible.
You could recharge it, but it would be pricey, and just repeat the problem shortly.

If the frost is on the back wall of the freezer then you most likely have a defrost problem or a bad evaporator fan motor.
