I have a simular problem. Got a 8500gt installed on a striker extreme mobo with 2gb Ram. All has been working fine for about 3 years until the other night. Played WoW only to have the game freeze on me after agout 1/2hr. It totally locked the pc. Reset the pc and tried again.. Same thing. Problem was getting worst. Eventually could play any games. Restarted pc.(running Vista) and hanged up on bootup. No messages/errors and no display. Ran vista in safe mode and all is fine. Uninstalled graphic drivers and software and it boots up normally. Reload graphic drivers/software and it hangs up. Again uninstalled drivers/sw. and is fine....wait what's this....an error message. No Vert. sync. on monitor display.
Checked using DirectX diagnostics and no 2D/3D acceleration.
It seems at this stage the Graphics card has failed. Time to buy upgrade. Has anyone have the same problem?? Please let me know.

You may need to install some case fans. airflow while playing games is really important as your system is being worked and needs to keep cool. Try removing the side of the case (left side there will be 2 screws usually on the rear) and see if that cools things down a little bit. If it does install some fans to move some air in your system.

Have you overclocked without upgrading your cooling? Does the card have enough power(not an issue if PCI-e). If not cooling is not THAT MUCH of an issue(as it always is a bit :-)

Anyways before all try this!

You need to set PCI latency.
In BIOS the default value is 32 or 64, right? set it to 64-128(rather 128)
that's just for poorly factory preset cards, however!

Now download and install this:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloadget.php?id=951&file=4&evp=5acb0bc51541ace8e21956306c3ac7a1

see also:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951#download

Run The program and set:
1. Graphics card latency -around 256
2. disk controller - 80-135(128 if only binary numbers are allowed)
3. any memory related stuff you might see-check if it's at least somewhere between 64-96
4. sound card -adjust to 64-116(64 is plenty if it's an onboard, but set even 128 if it's some Creative Labs...)

As your problem is related supposedly to graphics, you can be fine by just quickly setting them and forgeting the rest(but why hurry? it's short anyhow).

Try and you'll rate this fixya! :-)

And who is the manufacturer of your card? (not the chip! -we all know that:) Just for kicks.(or maybe a good advice in case...)

Sure, it should have an option to use DX9, make sure it's updated though. Also google the specs of your card and see if that helps.

hi im wesley. ok your graphics card might be to slow im guessing its a 256 mb card witch you will see most of the latest games now require 512 mb cards to work properly, but go into the game and set all the graphics to the lowest and if it works increase it a little at a time until it starts with problems then go a little lower and play it like that. your problem normally happens when your refresh rate is to hight your anti-aliasing is to high and your memory is to slow.

Hang problem

update graphics drivers, also check the games manufacturer website for any patches, as there may be issues with the game hopefully that should help.
