Question about RCA D52W20 52" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Power on and shutdown problems

I have a D52W20 (D5W20YX1, chassis ATC221) that I received from a friend as a project TV, and that I would like to get working. I am reasonably experienced in electrical engineering in many aspects, since it is both a hobby and something I do a fair bit in my work (I do electrophysiology and neuroscience research)... so I am very comfortable working inside the set and am aware of the safety issues involved. I'm not trained in TV repair, so any technical information and advice you folks can give me would be greatly appreciated. Most of the time, it will not start. After pressing the power button there is an immmediate faint click, and the green power LED will come on for about 10 seconds before turning off. The set will do this 3-5x, then require a minute or a few minutes before power-on can be attempted again. Sometimes (maybe 1 in 15 tries) the power light will stay on for longer - more like 30sec to 1min before turning off. Very infrequently - say 1 in 200 tries - there is an audible "thwip" and the crackle of HV electronics being energized, and the set will turn on! Sometimes it will stay on for quite some time, and when I first picked it up I managed to keep it on for a day at a time with no ill effects, though now if it turns on it will most likely shut down after a few minutes of use. Because the problem is intermittent and multi-symptomatic, I'm temped to start by cleaning/reseating all interboard connectors and reflow some solder joints at suspect locations. Snakehead, you seem to have given some advice to this end in other posts - can you elaborate on what solder points and/or connectors tend to be prone to failurs? Thanks in advance for any help you all can offer. I would also appreciate recommendations about service manuals - am I best off buying the official thomson one?

The problem does and has numerous times persisted across long power-off cycles. I'm specifically interested in regions where this chassis is known to have had problems vefore - particularly since someone mentioned the need to reflow solder joints before (a problem I've struggled with myself in the past). I think the flyback and horizontal output blocks are a good place to start?

I'm also interested in good sources for service information and shematics outside the official thomson resources. I'd like to repost this for a couple of further opinions, if this doesn't reflect negatively on the respondants.

Also worth noting, the problem seems to have evolved from the TV generally being able to stay on indefinitely after it "caught" that one time in 100 to now, where it pretty consistently shuts down after a few minutes (2-10) of operation in the following manner:

The picture quickly collapses/shuts down to black with concurrent loss of audio output while the green power light will stay on for a minute or so, after which the green power light turns off and the set won't respond to power-on requests (no green light) for a further minute or two.

Try to reset the unit.. turn off and take the power supply cord off the socket for 30 min. Turn it on again.. Next, try to check the power supply circuit for any capacitor problem.

I have a RCA 52"

Yes the ATC221 uses the 259296 flyback. If audio works and the on screen menu also comes up but no video its most likely a vertical deflection issue. I would check the vertical IC for signs of bad solder.

First you need to read the supply voltages to the STK's. Black things, size of 2 match books on a big heatsink. Sounds like your supply voltage is low, could be a bad STICK STK. usyually stk 130-20 or 150, etc..

No power

Check the ribbon cable connections between the boards to insure they are correctly seated as a 19 code usually means
Chassis detection, which means its not detecting a valid chassis usally the ribbon connections are the cause of that.
