No, the first phone that picks up will be the main answering machine. This will depend on which is set to the least number of rings. However, the phone will still work for both.

Is it possible to use 2 unrelated telephones using the same number but using 1 at one jack to dial out & a different phone & phone system at the other jack to record msgs? Can't afford to replace

If the two phones are in the same house You can hook all your phones to one line for them all. I have 5 phones in our house and run wires from the main line underneath the house and drilled a little hole in my base board and ran wires to each room. Also yo can use cordless phones and all you need is the main unit hooked to a power and phone line. I have three cordless and my answering machine works all the time when we are away. Cordless phones are roughly 60 dollars for three. I even got one in my shop outside. They have their own chargers as well.

Change rings from 2 to 4 before answering machine picks up

Need brand and model of the phone, this is covered in the user manual or guide if you have that. But if you don't will need to know the brand and model.

Got the timing fixed, but now the needle up/down button not working. I need my up/down button. Not used to sewing w/o it.

Which machine? The person who re-timed the machine should be able to answer your question about the "up down button" on the phone. He would know the brand of machine.

I need to know how to retrieve my messages when not home. I have the Southwestern Bell Freedom Answering Machine Model No. FA 972. Thank you.

Call your phone, let the outgoing message play when the machine answers, and wait for the beep. After the beep, enter the 3-digit security code you'll find on a sticker on the bottom of the machine. The machine will beep twice to let you know you entered the right code and it's ready for your commands.

Remote commands:

1# Plays messages in mailbox 1
2# Plays messages in mailbox 2
3# Deletes old messages (you need to play them all back first)
7# Starts recording a new outgoing message (press 7# again to stop recording)
9# Turn the system on or off
0# Monitor the room

While you're playing messages (you pressed either 1# or 2#) you have these commands:

3# Erase current message
6# Repeat previous message
7# Skip to next message
8# Repeat current message
## Stop playback

After your messages have played, you have 20 seconds to enter another command before the machine disconnects automatically.

You can download the manual here so you'll have a copy for future reference.

1. Too many rings before answering. How can I shorten? 2. Because message is short, how do I bring "beep" closer to my message?

You don't say what brand and model phone or answering machine you have, so I can't give you a step-by-step answer. But here is general information.

The number of rings until the answering machine picks up is controlled on some units by a switch. Most of the time you'll find it on the rear or one of the sides. If it's a cordless phone/answering machine combo, the switch will be on the base unit. These usually have positions for 2 or 4 rings. Some have a "TS" position as well. This is for "toll-saver", which extends the number of rings if there are no new messages. If you call to check message while you're away, if the phone rings more than the number of times you selected you know there aren't any new messages. Then you can hang up before the machine answers and you won't be charged for a call. (This is a hold-over from the days where you might need to make a long-distance call to check your messages. Most people have cell phones with national calling plans now and it doesn't really matter.)

Some newer units have a setup menu where you'll find the ring selection. On a cordless phone the menu button may be on either the base unit or the handset. It depends on the make and model.

On most of today's answering machines, the beep tone is added when you're done recording. Usually you press and hold a button to start the recording, make your announcement, then release the button. The beep is recorded when you let go of the button, so there shouldn't be much delay after the message end. If the beep comes a long time after you finish speaking, either you're not releasing the button, or you have a very old style machine with a fixed recording time. The instructions that came with these usually gave suggested messages that would take the time, and typically had you end with "...please wait for the beep and leave a message".

You can usually find manuals for downloading from the phone or answering machine manufacturer's website, or on one of the many other manual sites on the Internet. Try a search for "(insert your brand and model here) owner's manual" as a start. Of course, if all else fails another option is to get a new machine. Basic models aren't expensive, but if what you have can be made to work the way you want, why spend money?

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!

How to operate the answering machine

hi friend,
Step 1Call your telephone number and wait for the answering machine to answer. If you have left the answering machine in the off state then you should let it continue ringing until the machine finally answers, this may be as many as ten rings or more. When the machine finally answers, you may hear a series of beeping sounds.
  • Step 2Press "0" during the playback of the greeting message or during the series of beeps. Enter your PIN code within the next 2 seconds. You must know your PIN code to operate the answering machine remotely.
  • Step 3Wait for the prompt to enter a command code for remote operation. You will hear the machine report the current time and how many messages are in memory. The machine will then play a beep and wait for your command. To turn on the answering machine you must enter the corresponding code. You must enter the remote command within 15 seconds.
  • Step 4Hang up after the machine finishes the command and beeps. Call back to your number and make sure that the machine is now in the on state and will answer incoming calls.
  • jQuery('.article ol .image').each(function(i,e){ var $this = jQuery(this); $this.find('img').error(function(){ jQuery(this).remove(); $this.remove(); }); }); Tips & Warnings
    • Each brand and manufacturer of answering machines have different commands and PIN codes for the answering machines. Refer to your user manual for the exact codes and instructions on how to pick your PIN number for your phone.

    How to access messages remotely

While you are away from your home or
office, you can use a touch-tone phone,
or a pulse (rotary) phone with a pocket
tone dialer (available through your local
RadioShack store) to enter your PIN and
    do any of the following:
    • set the phone to answer or not
    answer calls
    • listen to your messages
    • record a new outgoing message
    • erase messages
    • monitor the room where the phone
    is located
    Notes:
    • You cannot remotely operate the
phone using its handset or another
telephone on the same line as the
    phone.
    • You can also listen to the message
recorded on Line 2 by making a call
to Line 1’s number (or vice versa).
    USING THE TOLL-SAVER
If RING TIME is set to TS (toll-saver),
(see “Setting the Number of Rings” on
Page 15), the phone answers after three
rings if you have new messages (ones
you have not listened to). If there are no
new messages, the phone answers after
five rings. This gives you time to hang
up before the phone answers so you
    can avoid unnecessary long-distance
    charges.
Note: Toll-saver works only on the line
you called. If Line 1 has no new messages,
but Line 2 has one, the telephone
answers after five rings when you
    call Line 1.
    USING REMOTE
    COMMANDS
Follow these steps to operate the phone
    from a remote location.
Note: If you wait more than 15 seconds
    between keypresses, the phone sounds
a long beep and hangs up.
    1. Dial your phone number and wait for
    the phone to answer.
    2. If the phone is not set to answer
calls, it answers after about 10 rings
and sounds a series of beeps.
    3. When the outgoing message begins
(or the phone sounds a series of
beeps), press #, then enter your PIN
    within 2 seconds.
If the PIN is correct, the phone announces
the day and time, then it announces
the number of new and old messages.
The phone plays all new messages,
then beeps about every two seconds to
let you know it is ready to accept remote
    commands.
    Notes:
    • If the phone does not respond, try
entering your PIN again. If you enter
an incorrect PIN three times, the
    phone beeps and hangs up.
    Remote Operation 27
    • When the phone is operating from a remote location, it stops all answering functions
and rC appears on the display on the base. The phone resumes answering
functions when it is no longer in remote operation, if you have not turned it off.
    • The remote playback of incoming messages is limited to 4 minutes. If you have
more messages after 4 minutes have passed, you must press # 2 again to listen
to the rest of the messages.
    • When using remote operation, you can only delete the current message during
playback. You cannot delete all the messages stored at one time.
The following table shows the remote commands you can use.
Note: Remote operation stops when someone picks up the handset and presses either
LINE 1 or LINE 2 (whichever is flashing), or any phone on the same phone line.
    Remote Commands
    Press #
    then (within
    2 seconds:
    Function
    1
    Repeat current message during playback.
    2 Play messages.
3 Skip current message during playback.
4 Delete current message during playback.
5 Stop playback, recording, and room monitoring.
6 Set the phone to answer or not answer calls.
7 Record or stop recording a new outgoing message.
    8 Play the outgoing message.
9 Switch to the other line (Line 1 or Line 2).
0 Monitor the room where the phone is located for 15 seconds
