Generally, if the alarm data are blinking every 5 seconds, that indicates the toner is low.
there are no other possible errors. may be your toner is completely empty as well. are the other 2 lights blinking or on?

The alarm and data lights are on constantly and it will not print. What is wrong?

This would indicate that the installed toner cartridge is nearly empty and will soon need replacing. The manual can be found here and the error troubleshooting can be found in section 4-1.

When I turn on the printer, the data and alarm lights come on. There is nothing in the printer que. I have power cycled the printer. I was trying to print a pdf file.

From the Service manual:

Toner low: The Data and Alarm LEDs blink once every five seconds.
Toner empty: The Data and Alarm LEDs blink once every second.

Alarm & Data LEDs are ON: Toner empty

The alarm button keeps blinking. How do I get it to stop?

Well I'm sure that the alarm button is blinking for a reason. I beleive that printer is a laser so unless you dont have paper in it :)
You most likely are low on toner or need to change the drum.

I have a brother hl-1240 that has both the yellow data and red alarm led's lit. and it just printed 10 blank pages

make sure your catridges are full because some printers don`t let you print at all even if only one catridge is out

Printer won't print

According to the operation manual: If alarm light and data light blink every 5 seconds- TONER LOW (purchase more toner and have it ready when the 'toner empty' is indicated). If alarm light and data light stay lit- TONER EMPTY (replace toner cartrige with new one).

Brother Printer HL 1240

OK figured out the sequence to resolve this error:

power off unit
unplug power cable for 1 minute
reset the power cable
open front door
press and hold the reset button under the lights
turn the power on
printer should then be reset
