Question about Husqvarna "Chain Saw - 16" Bar, 3 Hp

2 Answers

Bought a chain saw a little over a year ago...was very satisfied with its performance...needed some repair recently...had it looked at by a husky dealer...he said since it is less than 2 years old the repairs he made are covered under the 2 yr warranty, but I recently moved back to RI from our temporary residence in NH and have been unable to find my receipt...is there any way to determine from the serial number or other marking, when the saw was produced to prove its age? Please help, I'm a single mom with kids, I'm out of work and I have wood to cut and stack for next year for my woodstove. Because of that chain saw my family was nice and warm this winter...without its use I don't know what I would have done...thanks Debi

Hi franconiachi,

Yes, chain saws earned their keep this past winter!
If you paid for it with a credit card, the dealer you bought it from may be able to pull up the original recipe, though I guess more than a year ago may be backed up already.

I'm not a Husky dealer, but if he could provide you with a contact who could, I would think that someone at Husqvarna corporate could verify the manufacture date.

Another idea is to go through you old bank statement, find the transaction, photocopy it and either use that to track down the original recipe through the original dealer -- they'd then have the exact date and could fax a reprint to you -- or maybe the Husky dealer would accept it.

Reminds me to send in my warranty card...

Good luck,
railer

The SN on most of the newer Husqvarna saws is on the right side under the handle. The first digits are the year next is the month and then the last 4 digits are the number made at that point in the month.
Most of the plastic components have a year and month stamped inside. Look at the inside top cover also the flywheel is stamped.
Other Husqvarna saws SN are on the front left side and open to see, same system as above

Looking at buying a Husqvarna 55 Special pro. The serial number is 1998 8510004. The seller tells me he bought it in the 2000s, is it true.

Ask to see the sales receipt if you are in need of proof of purchase date. Even contacting Husqvarna to ask when it was registered may not be the actual purchase date. I saw a question not long ago about a saw that was purchased new that had been out of production for a couple of years. It is possible it sat on a dealer's shelf for a period.

Looking at the serial, it was manufactured in 1998, the 51st week (Dec), and was the 4th product that week.

I have a 235e husqvarna with tool-less chain tensioning . however cant seem to tighten the chain satisfactorly

Any weekday between 1300 and 1600, stop by McNasties, buy 2 premium coffees (one black). Continue on to your friendly neighborhood Husky dealer (leave the saw in the car) and present him with the coffee. Discuss the problem you are having and ask for his help. It appears to be possible to replace the tool-less setup with the tried and true version. I estimate $20-30. Probably less than repair cost for your current arrangement.

Hard to start.

My Husky 359 workshop manual says on Appendix A (USA) says "H" 3/4 turn CCW from lightly seated. "L" 1.5 turns CCW from lightly seated.
Page 36 (every other nation on earth) 1 turn CCW from lightly seated for both the "H & L" needles.
There is no recommended initial "T" setting. (from manual) "The idling speed is correctly set when the engine runs smoothly in all positions and there is a clear margin to the speed at which the chain starts to move". I wager your manual would be similar.
These are initial settings and the saw needs to be adjusted for performance. Start with a clean air filter and a fresh fuel mix @ 50:1 per Husky (1 gallon of premium fuel to 2.6 ounces of quality 2-cycle oil).

This explains performance carburetor adjustment better than I can:
Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.

There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.
I hope you found this post helpful.

Husqvarna 372 xp gas tank not venting has a new gas cap did not work

I looked at a 2007 IPL, your saw has a separate fuel tank vent. Husky is terrible about providing a nomenclature and you may need help from your local Husky dealer to identify components.

When I top up the chain oil it runs out of the opposite side really rapidly, I don't see how to fill it in the instruction booklet

Are you using bar oil? Is it less than 2 years old (warranted)? Did the chain come off and hit the tank?
I think your saw may have been impacted and the oil tank is broken. I didn't see an oil vent on the IPL but if the filler is on the bottom of the saw and you must lay it on its side to fill there must be one. Take it and your bar oil with you and stop by your friendly neighborhood Husky dealer. Ask what they think the problem might be. You might be pleasantly surprised. Purchase some 2 cycle oil, a new chain, some bar oil, something. When time for a new saw remember how they treated you.

When cutting with my husky 440 16'' the chain catches or stops

It's hard to say. 41CCs should handle a 16" chain reasonably well.
  1. What are you cutting? Hard woods oak and maple are more difficult than pine.
  2. Are you digging in the dogs and trying to force the saw through the wood? Let the saw determine how fast it wants to cut, I rarely engage the dogs on my 359, I let the weight of the saw work for me.
  3. How sharp is your chain? Have the rakers been filed to low?
  4. Is the saw bogging down at speed before contacting the wood?
  5. Your saw was set extremely lean to meet EPA requirements. It is fitted with adjustment limiters also mandated by the EPA. To lean can impact how it performs.
All of these and few not coming to mind effect how fast the saw cuts. This isn't the answer you wanted but it is honest. We would have to see you cut and examine your saw to provide anything better. HTH

Ive just bought a husqvarna 34 husky is this the model number 34? its serial number is 016810 but i cannot find details of it anywhere an want a manual can you tell me mixture also its my first chainsaw,...

Get Chain lube for the chain oiler. Naturally, husqvarna recommends that you use "genuine husqvarna" oil for your mixture, I recommend a quality oil, doesn't have to be husky. Husqvarna recommends a 50:1 ratio, other manufacturers, of vertually all 2 cycle power equiptment use a 40:1 ratio. This mixture is slightly richer, but will not hurt your chainsaw. May produce a bit more smoke. Not sure what a 34 husky is...neither is Husqvarna, I visited the website and even tried to download a manual. Looked at every husky model, no 34.

Found a part loose in my husqvarna chain saw

The "Illustrated parts lists" for your saw are here:

Try to identify the loose pin on the drawings. If unable to identify where it came I suggest your visit your local Husky dealer. Please advise me where it belonged once it is repaired. TIA
