Tines on Tiller don't work

I have an old Green Thumb, 5 hp tiller made by Briggs and Stratton. I have rebuilt the carburetor, and it starts and runs well. However, the tines don't move. I am guessing it is the chain or one (or both) of the sprockets. However, I can't seem to figure out how to get into the area to fix or replace the problem. I have pictures of the tiller together. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Eric

the tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft

First, check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks.

If they are o.k., then you will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb. cleaner. Make sure the small screen in the carb. is free of debris. Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152), to clean the small portals in carb. If the carb. has a foat, then you can use the Den tek Brush on the jet as well. Reassemble and start.

(NOTE: If the cleaning doesn't work, then buy a carb. kit and replace all appropriate parts.)

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

SOURCE: mtd rear tines tiller won't engage tines. F and R

It sounds like the shift shaft or something in the gearbox the shift shaft engages. I know you didn't want to hear this but it is not uncommon. Most operators don't use the clutch bail when starting, stopping, and shifting as they should.

I hate to say it but this may require a trip to your service center for repair.

Any small engine repair shop will have what you need. You can also find everything on line also. Just Google Briggs & Stratton engine parts.

Purchased hahn tiller 5hp briggs stratton with broken tines and bearing and seal leaks. where can i get parts

Parts for the engine can be purchased from briggs and stratton
The bearings and seal can be purchased from Napa. Dimensions are required for the bearing inner and outer diameters. (Caliper time)
The tines.... I don't know. My experience on the tines is you either find an old Hahn Eclipse Tiller for parts or you find a good craftsman that can make one. I had to make a LH tine using the broken parts, some forge hardened bar stock and a welder. The tine manufacture took much longer than expected...!
