How to correctly disconnect maxtor 500 gigabyte external hd

Dear sir May i know what is the best/correct way of disconnecting the new Maxtor 500 gigabyte USB external harddisk? Do i disconnect via unplugging the USB wire, or, do i disconnect via turning off the power point? Does any one of them has the risk of crashing the harddisk and causing data lost? Your advice is much appreciated Rgds Keith

Hi, Normally the steps would be: 1. In your PC, in the System Tray, click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" and then on the "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device-Drive(?); 2. Unplug USB cable; 3. Power down external device. Hope this be of some help/idea. Good luck and kind regards.

Try a different "data" cable between your computer and the external disk-drive.

If there is an external power-supply, borrow a "multimeter", and test that the power-supply is supplying power (correct voltage and correct amperage).

Try connecting it to another computer.

Disassemble it, and disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if the disk is working.

If it still is under warranty, either your local retail store, or Maxtor/Seagate will honour the warranty, and replace it.

I have a maxtor III usb 2.0 500 GB external hard drive. the light on the front goes out and works sometimes. when the light goes out the external drive gets disconnected . i checked for loose connections....

Possibly, the USB is not receiving current enough and occasionally it resets the USB interface. Try connecting it to another system, or to a powered USB host, and see what happens.
Another possibility (but you'd need to disassemble the external enclosure and connect directly the disk inside to a SMART-capable motherboard) is that the hard disk is developing a fault.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB 6Y080L YAR41BW0 internal hard drive not working think it might be the PCB Board not working.

It's possible that you're correct.

However, finding a Maxtor drive with an identical PCB is not going to be easy. Once you do, you can disconnect the "spinning" part of the disk-drive away from the PCB, and then swap PCB, and see if you can then QUICKLY(!) copy all 80GB to a "new" disk-drive.

Cannot get external hard drive to work

- Make sure that the hard drive (HD) is properly connected to the computer.

- Try connecting it to a different computer to make sure that the HD is the problem.

- Check the Disk Management in your computer to see if the HD could still be detected. Once detected, reformat the HD and it should work again.

To check the Disk Management:

NOTE: Make sure that the external HD is connected and turned ON.

1. Right-click "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista)
2. Select Manage and click on "Disk Management".
3. From the Disk Management, you will see a drive letters
4. Write down all the drive letters and then disconnect the Maxtor HD from the computer.
5. If there's a drive letter that disappears, then that is your Maxtor HD.
6. Reconnect the Maxtor HD and reformat it. You may right-click the drive letter and there's an option to format the HD.

If you're hearing a clicking sound while the HD is turned on, mostly, it's already defective.

Have a great day!

Does it give you an error message ? Are you running Windows XP or Vista? If so post it here so the problem can be further narrowed down.
You might want to try a chkdsk.

In Windows XP and Vista both, a shortcut to get to the command console is holding the Windows Key and pressing R.

in the command console, type:
chkdsk X: /f /r

Where X is the drive letter of the drive giving you problems.

This will run a chkdsk on your external, restoring files and folders that cannot be accessed.

I also have a Maxtor External hard drive and have to do this quite often. It's pretty frustrating.

Maxtor Diamondmax 80GB ATA 133 help!

there are several programs you can use to get your data off.
You will have to slave your new drive on to the IDE cable that your old one is on, you can then use symantec ghost to clone the old drive to the new,
Acronis true image is the other program you can use, put acronis true image on the new drive and the slave the old drive and take and image of it then recover it to the new drive.
Hope this helps
