Question about Garmin GPSMAP 60CS GPS Receiver
I just bought this gps unit 4 days ago and it was working fine. I turned it on today and it won't acquire any satellites. It's my understanding that if this occurs some sort of menu should open up but it does not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Go to the Garmin Web site's home page, avoid staring to long at the hot chick and click on "On The Trail" .. "Mapping Handhelds" .. scroll down to the second row far right and click on the 60CSx. You will then see the 60CSx page, look to the right and click on "Updates & Dowdloads", on doing so you will now see four downloads to choose from. The one you will need is "GPS Chipset Type G Ver. 2.90 as of Nov 27, 2006" if you follow this you shouldn't have any problems. If however you do i'll keep an eye on this page and try to help, this is my first GPS and also had the same issue.

I had this problem in December of 2009 with a 3 year old unit. It took my to my brother's house just fine, but when I turned it on again a few hours later, the satellites were flatlined.
I checked for stupid stuff like dead batteries and that Setup -> System -> GPS isn't set to "GPS Off". Then I updated the firmware but it didn't help, so I emailed Garmin tech support for an RMA# and they never got back to me... Now, a month later I called to see what's up with the RMA#.
It turns out you have to have the *latest* version of the the WebUpdater program. Use it to burn the firmware. When it offers to check for additional updates like voice prompts, CLICK YES! (even though this unit doesn't use voice prompts) It will comeback and offer to update the *chipset* firmware. That is the step you need to take to fix the problem.
Once I reprogrammed the chipset it worked great.
Garmin gets a C- for having this problem, an F for followup on customer emails, but a B+ for having a free fix available.
I bought a TomTom over christmas just so I could get around while my old 60CSx was sick. If Garmin had been quicker on customer support, I would not have bought from their competitors...

I downloaded and installed the updates including the chipset but still had the problem of not acquiring satellites. The problem was solved when I realized there were NiMH batteries in the unit. I changed the Battery Type in the System Setup page from Alkaline to NiMH and the unit works fine now.
