Try activating using the telephone. Open the Windows Activation and click "show me other ways to activate". Click use the automated phone system and click the location nearest you from the dropdown. Call the number and follow the prompts.

go to softpedia.com. download the cd key reader. Run it, you will be able to view you cd key. If activation has some problems, just call microsoft, and they will guide you to activate it over the phone.

it is not possible to obtain the key to your cd, as windows 98 is no longer supported for help by microsoft, if you need to obtain a key for your windows 98 disc then i suggest you try to goto serials.ws and search for "Windows 98" and try those product keys.

If you don't enter the product key within a certain period after installing, Windows XP will expire, and will cease to function .
Check this out. If this does not help, then call microsoft , they will do it for you.You'll have to activate Windows XP again. However, since all your hardware is the same, Microsoft will simply re-issue you the same key.
