I am sewing along and broke a needle. I replaced it with a Kenmore needle and now the bobbin thread won't pick up. I realized that I don't know the difference in needles (color top or band) I also noted that what I think is the bobbin tension screw is not there. This machine is 40 years old and the only one I have ever used--but I don't know much about it. Brenda
My name is Christopher and I would love to help you out. In order to do that, I need to know the make and model of your sewing machine. Also, if you still have the broken needle, can you tell me if it has anything stamped into it, such as a number?
Hoping to help, Christopher

Try installing a brand new needle (verify it is installed correctly). If it still does not pick up the bobbin thread, the needle/hook may be out of time, requiring service.
1st: what type of sewing machine? brand?
2nd: it's not picking up the bobbin thread and jamming up because it's out of time.
the machine probably skipped a tooth on one or more of the gears and the gears need to be either replaced or re-timed.
either of which can be very difficult for the average person. your best bet is take the machine to a repair shop or buy a new machine.
this picture is for timing a standard Kenmore type machine. also works for some Singer machines.
sometimes when you break a needle it can cause the machine to jump time, the machine would have to be taken to a sewing machine shop to be checked by the technican
check to make sure that the needle was put into the needle holder correctly all the way up into the needle holder--flat side of the needle to the back side of the machine if the machine still doesn't up the bobbin thread then it's possible that when the needle broke that it caused the machine to go out of time which means it has to be retime at a sewing machine shop
