I have the same problem but the camera wont take any photos. sometimes the camera will come on but other times nothing. the previous photos that have ben taken can be displayed the problem is in taking photos. there is no picture showing on the screen only black. it has become very unreliable at the moment i cant get any display. the camera is only 1 and a half years old. do you what the problem is and is it worthwhile getting it fixed or how do i fix it? my husband has thought about opening it up, he is a technician and believes there is a loose connection in the camera. what do you think.{the camera has been well looked after and not roughly handled} could you provide some information about the disassembly of the camera.

Transferring pictures to the computer isn't a problem. All I did was connect the camera to the USB connection at the back. The software with the camera automatically grabs the information. I have been able to transfer pictures to my iMac as well. I didn't use the canon software so it was a little more challenging but not much.

My powershot A540 shows a black screen and takes blank photos. Something between the viewer/card and the lens is closed and only opens occasionally, no matter how much I fiddle with the settings.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

I have been trying to download my photos from Canon A540 Dig Camera - previously I would simply plug into my computer and instantly the Canon software would pick up I was trying to transfer images and...

What OS does your computer have? If you open the file explorer (Computer or My Computer), is the camera listed among the devices with removable storage? If it is, the problem is that auto-run has been turned off by Windows (this is a security issue) for removable media. (It applies to flash drives too.)

Treat the camera as removable media and either launch the software first and then choose File > Open > the camera or click on the pictures on the camera by opening the Camera folders. The software should launch if the default program association has not been changed. (In Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs.)

I hope this helps.

Every time I turn on my Canon A540 Powershot I get the black date/time screen. The date/time is all zero (the photo properties default to 1 Jan 1980) and I have to either enter the date/time or press...

Inside the battery compartment, right beside the AA batteries, there's a tiny little door labeled CR1220 (see this picture). Pry the door open with your fingernail, remove the little button battery located there, and take this battery down to your local drugstore to buy a replacement camera clock battery. Remember, it's a "CR1220" battery. It should cost only about $4.

My A540 clicks like it takes a picture but nothing shows on the display screen. When I take the memory card out and insert to computer the frame of pictures show but the photos are black.

But if you do notice shutter movement, then this would then likely be a CCD imager failure. It would in that case require Canon service to repair (1-800-OK-CANON).

Can not change the number of images that can be taken

Ok, this is a very easy procedure..
While in picture taking mode, press the set button and it will activate the controls to choose the image resolution. If you select a higher image size or number, it will improve your quality of picture as the number of the resolution you choose gets higher. Simply use the side scroll and the up/down scroll on the back... that will do it for you!

Canon Powershot A540 - Change Batteries when Batteries Fully Charged

Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:
