some games tell me that i need at least 12mb of available video memory, so how what exactly is video memory and how do i increase it

  • ultimitloozr May 11, 2010

Most modern games require either 128 or 256MB as a bare minimum to run. Increasing it depends on your system. Are you using an on-board video controller or is it an add-in card? Onboard video "steals" some of your system memory to use as video memory. Depending upon your chipset, you may be able to dictate how much memory can be allocated for video. This setting is gernerally accomplished through the BIOS. If you have an add-in video card, it has a fixed amount of video memory already installed on it (in most cases) although I have seen a couple that will allow you to add more memory to them, but they are rare (and expensive). In most cases, if you are using an add-in card, you will need to purchase a new one that meets the requirements of the game. If you are using on-board video and cannot adjust the amount of RAM to use for video, again, you will need to purchase an add-in video board.

Before buying any add-in video boards, make sure it meets the requirements of the game(s) you play. Many require hardware shading engines, texturing engines and the like. You also need to be sure you get one that fits the proper type of slot in your system, normally PCIe or AGP8x. Check your motherboard documentation to be sure.

That depends on what kind of problem it says you have. What graphics card do you have? How much graphics memory is onboard? What are the requirements of the game as far as the graphics card? It may be that the graphics chip you have is not supported by the game. Your card may not support Shading. It may not have enough video memory. There are dozens of possiblities.

Can't load up a 3d game to play on my computer

If your Graphic Card does not support the 3D options, you won't be able any 3D PC games!

You have to look at your PC/Laptop specifications & the PC games requirements to play any higher graphic PC games. For any PC gaming PCs you have to install "DirectX' ie. latest version and updating graphic cards drivers too.

Hope it helps.

I want a compatible video card for my pc

This sounds like your computer may be several years old and the hardware a little outdated. It will depend on the game since today's latest games require not only 3d-acceleration but super fast acceleration as given by "NVIDIA" or "ATI"'s latest graphic cards.

If you are running a relatively simple game, you need to see if your computer uses which type of graphic card connector.

In the old days it was PCI, then came AGP and later PCI Express.

What the above will tell you is which 3d graphic card type to buy. You can get a graphic card at newegg.com or lots of other places varying in speed and capacity.
