Power up button (internal) broken

Hi there

Have just fitted a new centre hinge cover which I needed anyway to get the silver power up button but there is obviously a part which connects this to the mother board. Anyone know what it is and how to replace it?

Thanks

That hinge cover connects the top up above the keyboard. What needs to happen is the bottom part of the over needs to go over the holes near the keyboard and then the rest of the cover you will need to snap into place so its flat all around

My power button on my Gateway ML6232 is loose

Keyboard/Hinge Cover with Power Button Bezel,

http://www.laptopswer.net/products.php/GATEWAY_ML6000-MT6000_POWER-BUTTON_3CMA7KBTA07/cPath,1_97_102/language,en_US/osCsid,8d147ed2c28ef93651edc40940d868e7

The Power On switch is not part of this small cover. The Power On button that you see, is merely a little button cover. The actual switch is under it, and mounted to the laptop.

[ The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch.
Much like this example of an ATX power on switch,

http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html ]

Removal and Replacement of the Hinge Cover with Power On bezel:

1) Remove ALL power to the laptop. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

2) This strip cover pops up. It has small plastic protrusions, or tabs molded on the outside edges.
These tabs snap into place in the Palm Rest Cover.

I use a small flat tip Jewelers screwdriver, and ease up on the end opposite of the Power On button. Then carefully go along the edges.
Replacement is to just line it up, and snap back into place.

Power cord on flat iron broke

This is a very common problem. Only way to fix it is to replace the cord, which is not all that easy. You'll need TWO regular philips screwdrivers (size #2) plus a couple of little ***** philips screwdrivers. And a soldering iron, solder, and heatshrink.

Start by popping off the two plastic covers on the hinge area. Sometimes they break: they're not really necessary anyway. Use the two screwdrivers on the screws on each side of the hinge: one will eventually come loose. Take the screw out, then use a screwdriver to push out the hinge pin. Keep track of any washers that might fall out. Carefully remove the big spring, and lay the two halves of the iron out flat. On the control side, there are several screws that hold the covers on: remove those carefully. If the cord is the kind with the swivel thing, you'll have to take out all of those parts. There will be two wires going from the cord into the circuit board: sometimes they are attached with tiny screws, sometimes they are soldered. You have to solder a new cord onto those wires.

You can buy replacement cords at most hardware stores, or steal a power cord off another (broken) appliance. Two-wire cord is preferred: flat irons don't use a ground wire.

Cut the power wires in the flat iron: they are usually blue and brown. Brown goes to the black wire on your replacement cord, blue goes to white. Strip the wires carefully, slip the heatshrink on, solder, then slip the heatshrink over the repair and heat it to seal it up.

Now the hard part is trying to secure the new cord, since it doesn't fit the way the old one did. I usually put a big zip-tie on the cord, which is then captured when you put the covers back on.

Once the cord is repaired, you can re-install the covers. Don't tighten the screws too much, they are really easy to strip out. Carefully insert the legs of the spring into each half of the iron, then hold them together while you slip the hinge pin back in: it's a little tricky. Then use the two screwdrivers again, this time to tighten the screws. If the plastic covers aren't broken you can snap them back in if you want.

See? I told you it's not that simple. But since a new iron is, what, $100, it's worth a try.

Good Luck!

One of the softclose buffers on the Subway toilet seat has pulled

Each soft close 'Barrel' is handed - one left - one right. (One is grey - the other white).

Most soft close errors occur because the seat hinges come loose. When this happen, the barrels slightly pull-out of the seat. (There are silver discs on the barrels - These should be tight against the seat).

Once the barrels become loose the first thing that happens is the top cover won't soft close - but the seat still does.

To rectify - puch both barrels tighly into fitting and tighten the hinges. (See below).

To tighen the seat hinges you need to get a flat headed screwdriver underneath the chrome round hinge cover - and 'flick off'. Underneath is a X head screw which id also hexagonal. You can either tighen both by spanner - or screw driver. (sometimes these can be tricky - but it will come off).

If both cover AND seat do not soft close AND the barrel silver discs are firmly located against the seat - the barrel has probably broken.

If so - spare parts can be obtained here:

Replacing Power Button Circuit Card on Gateway W730 K8X Laptop

The instructions for replacing the keyboard include the cover you have to remove to replace the power button pcb. The power button pcb is attached to the bottom of the bezel that covers the hinges/button array. In a nutshell you just remove the 2 screws indicated in the instructions, pry the hinge covers up a bit, then gently pry the bezel up from the bottom. remove the ribbon cable, pull back the small piece of tape, remove the three small screws holding the pcb on, and remove it from the spring clips.

Power button mulfunction?

ok, to get at the switch board, take a flat bladed screwdriver and /carefully/ lever the outside ends of the hinge covers vertically upwards. Once the covers are free (you'll find that they are attached to the blue strip), slide the blue strip and hinge covers to the LEFT and then lift. The strip should free from the chassis. The switch board should be held in by two screws (one holds a lug to hold down the keyboard) and connects to the motherboard via a ribbon cable. The part number for the switch board is printed on the upper side of the board. You might find it advantageous to order a new ribbon cable as well; both parts should be readily available from your newarest independent service centre or direct from Dell.

Compaq Presario V4000 (v4118AP) right hinge broken

I had the same problem, they are very easy to fix, I did a search earliar and found some on the link below.

http://www.pchub.com/uph/laptop/291-29919-6327/Compaq-Presario-V4000-Series-Hinge.html

You do not need to dismantle to base, you have some star screws under the battary and one either side that loosens the small panel near the screen (where the power button is). The screen cover has screws under the plastic covers then just unclips, be gentle. after that it is self evident

There are 3 screw behind the laptop, on the back of the screen hinges. Remove them then open the laptop, and with your finger nails, lift the power cover closest to the screen, it will then raise and you will be able to remove the keyboard.

Hp M525 repair needed

My wife brought this camera home from work for me to look at. It had the sunken/broken power button problem.  The T-shaped hinge was broken where it connects to the power button section. I couldn't see any way to glue or repair it that would be strong enough so I came up with an alternate fix.
The actual power switch is below the broken button, just a touch below the "ON/OFF" text. I decided to make a button that pushed the switch directly rather than pivoting like the original.
I needed a push-button shaped object with a shoulder on it (so it wouldn't fall through the hole I was going to drill in the back). I ended up using a small green LED (3mm size I think). I drilled a hole big enough for it to move but not so big it would fall through. I cut the leads off flush with the body and sanded them flat. The hole I drilled lines up with the little bump on the original plastic switch piece.
So I put the LED in place, the original plastic piece over it and added a little bit of self adhesive felt (that you would stick on the bottom of something to protect your furniture) at the top where the silver button is (just to keep the original button from sinking inward). I put the back on the camera and checked that the power button clicked nicely. It did so I put the camera back together and it's as good as new.
And it has a snazzy green power button now.
So if you are handy you can probably fix the camera yourself.
Good luck - Greg
