Question about Epson Stylus Photo R320 InkJet Printer

6 Answers

Service required I am receiving a message that reads . . . Service Required . . . Printer parts are at end of service life . . . see manual for details. My problem is: I can't find my manual! I have not had any other problems with this printer and estimate that I bought it about a year ago. Any feedback is appreciated.

  • Herpo Dec 19, 2007

My R320, although printing well, has been giving me the end of life error message and then stopped dead. I can't even move the carriage to remove the inks. I d/l the SSC pgm but it seems to be just a chep resetter, which I don't need. How do I reset the system so that I no longer get this error message?

    Thank you

My epson stylus photo R320 suddenly gave me a message that says: service required - parts are the end of their service life. And it would not print anymore. This is all too strange since it worked absolutely fine since about 3 years until that message appeared. How can I get my printer to work again?

Please go to my website http://www.the-inkstore.co.uk . I have the latest version of SSC Service Utility to download directly onto your computer and instructions on how to use it, what to click on etc etc. Click any of the Epson links if you can't find it, everything you need to know will be there.

For Epson RX500 users there is also a manual reset on my site, as the SSC Serve software won't do it for you.
When using the program & choosing your printer from the list, it may have a weird name with 'x' in the model number, this is because some configurations are for many models in a series. For example, the C46 will be listed as C4x as it is for the C42, C44 & C46 models.

I hope this helps all Epson users to overcome the Epson scam of page counting and locking out until you pay their dealers money for maintenance.

If you like what I've done for Epson users, please show your appreciation by spreading the word and perhaps buying your ink from my site.

Happy trouble free printing

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

Took alot of work but I fixed it.
Frist thing you need to know that error means your ink waste pad is full. Its a $75.00 to replace but there is a work around it.
You will need this free app. SSC service utitlty.
http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html Its a great app.
Instrusctions are on the website there.
You will also have to Open the access panel on the rear of the printer (remove screw) and look inside carefullly with a flashlight. You will see a tube (down and to your left) coming from the cleaning pump and it will have an open end on it. This is the tube that delivers ink to the waste pad.
Use a piece of coat hanger wire or equivalent, and fish out this piece of tube. Bring it to the outside of the printer, thru the access panel.
Find yourself a suitable container (Tupperware or a plastic cup or jar) that is not too tall. Put the tube into this container and secure the tube and container so they won’t come apart or lose connection if the printer is moved.
If you wish you can make a hole or notch in the access panel cover so it can be replaced.

If you are based in North America you can resolve the key problem which is to reset your waste ink counter using the utility provided by Epson here:

However, this is ONLY available in Canada and the USA, nor for Europe or similar. This means anyone outside of that needs to wait for or locate a grey market resetter via google (if one exists and I don't think there is one at present) or wait until the SSC utility is updated to be compatible.

BUT... You still need to resolve the problem of your waste pads which will be approaching saturation point. There are instructions available on various sites that cover a large number of printers. I'm pretty sure the CX3900 is not directly covered but you will doubtless find guides for other models that gives some clues for your own.

Hope that helps...

Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life. See your printer documentation.

Q: What should I do if my printer driver displays the message parts inside my printer are reaching their end of service life?

A: See the Epson Ink Pad Reset Utility page.

Epson Ink Pads Reset Utility

If your product is displaying an end of life service message, please view and complete the required information below to proceed.

Please explain the message I am getting in my printer driver that says parts inside my printer are reaching their end of service life.

Like so many other products, all Epson consumer ink jet products have a finite life span due to component wear during normal use. At some point, the product will reach a condition where either satisfactory print quality cannot be maintained or components have reached the end of their usable life. This is the normal product life cycle for highly mechanical devices like printers. This message is a warning that certain parts have reached the end of their usable life and that your printer will no longer work until it is serviced.

What parts are we talking about?

The message refers to the ink pads, which are actually a number of porous pads in the printer that collect, distribute, and very importantly contain the ink that is not used on printed pages. Ink is collected by these pads during the initial setup of the product, during cleaning cycles and when printing borderless photographs. Most users will not receive this message before the printer is replaced for other reasons. Some high volume users or those who use the printer for many years may receive this message about ink pads before other components reach the end of their usable life.

Why does my printer stop functioning when I get the message?

Epson is committed to ensuring the proper operation of all our devices to minimize the risks of property damage or personal injury during the lifespan of the product. The printers are designed to stop operating at the point where further use without replacing the ink pads could create risks of property damage from ink spills or safety issues related to excess ink contacting an electrical component.

Is there anything I can do to continue using my printer?

Epson recommends replacing the printer, but if you want to continue using it, Epson recommends having the printer serviced at an Epson Customer Care Center. You may also be able to have the ink pads replaced by an independent service provider and use the Ink Pad Reset Utility to reset the Ink Pad Counter to continue using the printer. Please note that replacement of ink pads is relatively expensive and may not be a good investment for lower cost printers because the printers' other components also may be near the end of usable life. Epson does not recommend ink pad replacement by users without technical training or resetting the Ink Pad Counter without replacing the ink pads.

Note: This utility is for Windows XP and Vista operating systems only. We hope to develop an option for Mac users as well; however, we do not have an ETA or the OS requirement at this time.
To download this utility, please complete all fields below, select the agreement check-box and click Download. Required fields are noted with an asterisk(*). Some models may require you to be redirected to another website to finalize the process.

Go here to complete the agreement and download the utility:

I have an Epson R320 Printer. error message;service required. printer parts are at end of service life see service manual for details. I can not find anything in the service manual about this. This printer...

This message indicates that your waste ink pads are full and require replacing. Replacement is costly, messy and requires the printer to be taken completely apart. Most often the counter has "jumped" to the end of life number, this especially happens where 3rd party or refilled inks have been used. If you believe this to be the case and there is no sign of ink leakage and the pads look fairly clean then you can just reset the counter using special software called the SSC utility. See these sites:
http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml
http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html
More information about this issue and the "official" Epson resetter is available from the Epson web site, please read this link:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/InkPadsForm.jsp

Please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.

Epsonr220 service required

If the message/error you're getting is:
"Service required"
...or...
"Parts in the printer have reached the end of their service life"
(you get the idea!).

... then your problem is that the waste ink pads in the base of the printer need replacing and a little searching on google using keywords "R220 epson waste ink service" should get you everything you need to:
- reset the waste ink counter
- install an external waste tank

After that it's really a case of carrying on as before... Appreciate this is late in the day but hope it helps.
