All you have to do is replace the power supply, and the computer will come on. What has transpired, is the power supply went out, and the people you received the computer from, didn't know that. Too bad, as this is a cheap fix, and easy to do.
Do you have another desktop computer, that you can borrow a power supply out of for a test?

The Dimension 8300 uses the standard ATX power supply, that about 98% of computers out there do.

The Dell Dimension 8300 uses a Pentium 4 processor.
Uses either DDR Sdram at 333MHz (PC2700) or DDR Sdram at 400MHz (PC3200)
Maximum TOTAL Amount of ram is 4GB
Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot is 1GB.

Motherboard chipset is Intel 875P
Has an AGP 8X slot for a graphics card. (Remember that it's AGP 8X. This is the best version of the AGP style graphics cards. They still sell them)
Has four PCI slots.
Uses an IDE harddrive. (IDE is also referred to as EIDE, ATA, and PATA)

Has either a 250 Watt power supply, or a 305 Watt power supply. Back when this computer was made, power supply's actually only put out 70 percent, of the stated maximum wattage. Not the computer manufacturers fault, it was the power supply manufacturer. (The power supply's are made by somebody else, just like all the parts are for a pre-built computer) The power supply manufacturer had the tendency to 'fudge' the Wattage rating up a little. Made the power supply look better.

A computer will only use the power it needs, and no more. I don't care if you put a 10,000 Watt (Exaggeration. They don't make them for a personal computer) power supply in your computer,
if it only needs 100 Watts, it only uses 100 Watts. (Like surfing the internet)

I recommend this $30, reliable, decent power supply. It's a 350 Watt unit,

How to install a power supply,

Could be a Cpu. That one got me, I must admit! Thought sure it was the Psu by the symptoms. Just for fun, do you have any ram sticks that are good, that you can stick in it? Compatible ram sticks. Either
PC2700 or PC3200. Just one ram stick for a test. Put it in Slot 1.
(Sometimes printed on the mobo as DIMM 1)

Then see if you have a compatible Cpu. Past that point it's the mobo itself. (Motherboard)

You may have a electronic problem.
could you open the computer and look at the CPU. Around the CPU are little canisters called capacitors. the tops of these capacitor are rounded, means you need to replace them.
they are about 8-10 of them, it is a $5.00 fix and it works well after that

How do I remove the power button on Dell Dimension 8300 desktop

open the side- and along the just inside the front exposed edge there are several tab that get push inward to release the front. They have a tendency to catch again when you go to the next'll just have to play with it a bit. once that is open you'll see the other little plastic tab that holds the switch assembly . Don't forget to UNPLUG the power supply.

Dell Demension C521. Dead! Nothing! Even the little led light on the motherboard.

This is most likely caused by a power supply failure. If you have or know someone who has another power supply you could use for testing thats where you'll want to start.

Hope this helps.
