I have a Gaetway laptop Model MX6442, Model #MA3. My kids broke the CD drive, the door does not open and when I open it with poking thru the little hole, it hard to close. Can I replace the CD drive. Thanks

I have a Gateway P172X laptop whose dvd door will not open. I have gone through the Computer (right click on E drive and select Eject) and tried hitting the button on the outside of the DVD door. The dvd spins once but does not open. Poking a paper clip into the hole does not work. Also I tried to uninstall the DVD drives and rebooting. Original configuration and problem back on reboot.

Depends - what gateway? the one you listed under?? Because the model you posted with already came with a DVD drive.

Reply with the model of your machine and i can probably find you help. Gateway usually has instructions on their site.

The instructions for the M305CRV are here.

That model can use pretty much any standard laptop CD if you dont mind the face not matching get a generic drive like the Sony CRX880a at

Gateway 450ROG, will not start. Red DVD/CD ROM

I have the very same problem, the Drive light turns red, the screen is "black" and the battery charging light indicator on the front is off. No differance if I'm traying to power up on battery or AC-adapter.

Before this problem appeared I had problems where the laptop was powering off, with no warning, and I had to restart it. This happened several times and was going on for about a week before it died totally. Can it be the CMOS battery on the mother board? Anyone having clue what the problem could be?

I can't insert any cd's.

Maybe the laser eye is jammed. It tracks back and forth reading data from the disc.
You may either replace the drive or have it repaired.
I had one on my PC do the same vibrating, clicking noise. It only cost 40.00 to replace.
But for a laptop, you're looking between 60-100 dollars to replace.
You can see how much it would cost to repair first, but my guess is it would be cheaper to replace.

Cd rom drive not working, will not read discs

If it will not read anything and doesn't spin up then it's time to replace it.

Here's one on ebay that should work for you...

what do you mean not recognized? not detecting the drive or not reading? if not recognized by windows you can check the driver for drives in the windows if not reading it is the lens problem..if the lens problem, the solution only is to replace the lens or to replace the whole drive

Gateway M505 internal cd-rom slot does not take in a cd dvd

Not unless you know A LOT about electronics. It's best to just remove the drive and buy a replacement on ebay.

You can either search for M505 drive

or use the part numbers from the drive if you want an exact replacement.

Best of luck!

Replacing dvd/cd-rom drive on gateway laptop

Without knowing your specific laptop, look underneath about 5 inches from the edge where the drives slides in. You should see a screw there but not holding a panel.

Remove that one screw, pop the drive open and give it a gentle pull, it should just slide out.

Most laptop drives are the same with the exception of the faceplate and the bracket (surround) that is attached to the bare drive.
This is removable and can be transferred to another drive. Careful not to lose any of those tiny screws =)
