Probably dead ... salvage HD?

I have an old, dead iPod. 30gig, skinny. It will not appear in iTunes. When I plug it into a computer, the battery recharges on the screen. The click wheel does not seem to work at all. What I am wondering is if I can remove the hard drive and put it in a portable hard drive case/kit. Right now, I have no idea if the hard drive works at all.

If you go to device manager ( right click on my computer --> properties --> hardware tab --> device manager )

does it show up in there ?

Also if you right click on my computer --> manage --> disk management

Does it show up in there ?

If no to both of the above then possibly a dead hard drive - you can find guides online on how to replace a hard drive but be extremely careful as the logic boards in ipods are very easily damaged if dropped or knocked etc so follow the instructions to a T.

When i plug my ipod on to itunes it wont show up

Everytime I unplug my Nano from my laptop after charging it goes dead


What you are going to need to do is restore the Nano. Follow the instructions provided for you below:
  1. Start by syncing your iPod with your computer. When you do this, the iPod management screen will appear. Midway down that screen there's a button that reads "Restore." Click the restore button. This begins the process of restoring the iPod to its factory settings. After you click the restore button, iTunes will ask you to confirm that you really want to do this. If your iPod content is backed up, go ahead.
  2. The iPod restore process includes iTunes downloading and installing iPod software and bug fixes. You will see a window that looks like this. Follow the onscreen instructions.
    **On a Mac, you will be asked to enter your computer’s password. On Windows, the installation will just proceed.
  3. As iTunes restores the iPod, you will see a progress bar.
  4. After the restoration process has completed, iTunes will pop up a window letting you know that it’s done.
  5. Now you’ve got an empty, freshly formatted iPod. Now you can sync the iPod with your computer and download your iTunes library again.

I need to know i can clear/erase songs on my 2005 30gig ipod model a1136


on the ipods the most common way to delete songs off of it is thru the itunes software, connect your ipod and itunes should open up and if not make sure you have itunes installed and running you can get the latest itunes for free from apple.com or just google itunes, once you have itunes runing your ipod should appear in the sidebar click on it and then click on the songs list under it, then select the songs you want to delete and hit delete

IPOD doesn't hold charge; just get clicking noise when plugged in.


Well your battery is probably dead; but i would recommend that you first plug it in and restore it using itunes. If your not familiar with the restore process you will simply plug in the ipod and wait for it to appear in itunes. on the summary page you will look for a restore/update button. After clicking that, follow the on screen instructions. After the ipod reboots and reconnects to the computer, eject it through itunes and charge it until the ipod screen says fully charged. after you see this screen, reset the ipod by pressing both the menu and center buttons at the same time until you see an apple appear on the screen. If none of these steps work you will need to either get a new battery or new ipod. For a new battery you would want to contact apple at 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273). Hope this helps :)

Will not turn on at all


1. Open iTunes.
2. Connect iPod.
3. Click on your iPod, and click Restore.
This should solve it as it restores the original software, note, all data will be erased.

If this does not help: Call APPLE.

My 30G 5th Generation pod is totally dead and will not charge even with a new battery


  1. Toggle the Hold switch. To do this, slide the switch to Hold (an orange bar appears) and then slide it back (orange bar is hidden).
  2. Reset the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.

    If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.

    If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, connect the iPod to a power source by either plugging it into an Apple iPod USB Power Adapter or directly into a computer's USB port.

  3. Let the iPod charge for at least 20 minutes. Note: If the iPod is connected to a computer, make sure the computer is not set to sleep, standby, or hibernate.
  4. After the iPod has charged for at least 20 minutes and while it is still connected to the power source, toggle the Hold switch again as in step 1.
  5. Try resetting the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.

    If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.

    If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, the iPod should be serviced.
