It's located on the freezer side.Take off all the shelves and the drawer and you see a panel with lots of screws atached to the back wall , take it out and you'll see the coil and the heaters atached to it ,one in the bottom of the coil and the other in the middle.

Defrost Problem

Defrost problems can cause both sections not to work. You need to find out why it's not defrosting. There are three things that cause a defrost problem:defrost heater, defrost thermostat and defrost control.

If you have an older refrigerator, it probably has a mechanical defrost control. Find it and turn it clockwise until the refrigerator cuts off. (Note that the defrost control is normally located either in the refrigerator near the cold control or at bottom behind the kick plate). To view a video of testing a manual defrost timer. If your refrigerator is newer it will have an electronic defrost control and you won't be able to turn to defrost. Most refrigerators with electronic controls have some method of maunaly going into a defrost. You will need to refer to the tech sheet or service manual for this procedure on your model. Now that it's in defrost, wait a few minutes. If the defrost heater gets hot, replace defrost control. If it doesn't get hot, then the problem is either the heater or the thermostat.

At this point, you need to melt the ice. The best way to melt the ice is to use either a hair dryer or heat gun. Be careful with the heat gun you can melt your fridge pretty quick.

Once the ice is gone, you can check the heater by unplugging wires and using an ohmmeter to check for continuity. If you have continuity, the heater is good and you should replace thermostat. If you don't replace the heater, at this point you won't be able to check the thermostat but if the heater is good replace it.

Ge refrigerator top freezer is frosting over

Refrigerators that self defrost have three main components that cause defrost to take place. On your model GTH18ECC2RBB there is a WR55X10397 Defrost Control Board
e09a6ac4-8e1a-421f-a2da-14ff1c386c84.jpg

This part is most likely the problem and is found inside the fresh food compartment and inside the control panel. The location is 257 in this photo HERE Sometimes the defrost control board will show burn marks but not always. The other two parts that may be defective are the WR51X10038 Defrost Heater

The WR51X10038 Defrost Heater is location 618 in photo HERE
and the=> WR50X10071 Defrost Thermostat
ba9f87d6-60d9-4ee7-b168-2123fa15d7a2.jpg

The defrost thermostat is location 630 in photo HERE a tutorial of how to test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat can be found on the parts pages listed above. I will try to put the defrost heater test below. I think the defrost control board is most likely the problem here so look it over first. Manually defrost the evaporator with a hair drier so you can remove the defrost heater and test for continuity. I am here should you have questions Thanks Sea Breeze

Freezer is not deforsting

If your model you listed is a TFX27PRBWW it will have a defrost timer located in the fresh food compartment and behind the controls. It's location is 257 in this photo HERE I would like you to turn the timer clockwise slowly until youi hear the compressor and fans stop. This should put the refrigerator into defrost if the defrost heater is still working. Did you hear any crackling or sizzle when place into defrost this way? Wait up to 35 minutes for the timer to come out of defrost and it should restart the refrigerator compressor and fans. If it does not come on automatically then simply turn the timer slowly clockwise again until they do restart. If you need to turn timer again to start refrigerator you will need to replace the timer=> WR9X489 Defrost Timer

If the defrost timer is not the problem then we move to the freezer side, remove the rear panel of freezer and defrost the frost covering the evaporator as in this photo HERE The model TFX27PRBWW takes a=> WR51X10055 Defrost Heater Assembly
2_1_2013_8_53_33_pm.jpg

and the defrost thermostat=> WR50X122 Defrost Thermostat
2_1_2013_9_08_25_pm.jpg

The defrost heater is location 230 and the defrost thermostat is location 24 in this photo HERE Instructions in testing these parts are located on the parts pages I listed above. Please let me know if the model number is different than the one above your post so I may help you better, Thanks Sea Breeze

I have replaced a defrost heater #AH1993872 in my refrigerator Kenmore side by side, model # 363.50232000, S/N 04727723. I would like to check, wheather the defrost heater works properly. What is the...

The defrost time is about 30-45 minutes. This does not mean that the heater is turned on for the full defrost time. It turns on until the defrost thermostat senses the temperature is at 40 deg F then it cuts the power to the heater. Then after the defrost cycle time is over, the compressor is then powered to continue the cooling cycle.

To test, locate the defrost timer. It looks something like this,

slamfix_39.jpg It can either be found in the temperature control box in the refrigerator compartment, or located somewhere near the compressor. When you find it, look for a round cam on the side. Using a flat screwdriver, turn it until it clicks. With the fridge plugged in, the compressor should be off and the defrost heaters should be warming up. You should either hear the ice crackling and melting and see the water flow down the drain tube to the pan below the refrigerator. After about 45 minutes, the compressor should turn on. Hope this helps you.

Won,t get cold freezer side not freezing it is a ge side by side . ice is present at the back of freezer side

The problem is most likely the defrost heater element(s) and/or the defrost timer. The defrost heater element(s) are located with the evaporator core behind the access panel inside of the freezer, and can be removed, tested with an ohm meter, (any reading other than infinity would most likely mean the heater element is functional) and replaced if necessary. The defrost timer can be located inside of the refrigerator, or outside of the refrigerator behind the front kick panel, or behind the rear access cover on the back of the refrigerator.

Usually if the evaporator core is freezing up and not allowing air to flow through the evaporator core, (necessary for the system to function properly) then the defrost timer is most likely working and the defrost heater element(s) would most likely be at fault.

Always place a towel on the bottom of the freezer and use a blow dryer to defrost the evaporator core and never use any sharp or hard objects to pick away the ice or the evaporator core can be damaged and the refrigerant will be leak from the system.

I have included some images to help assist you including an image of a defrost timer that is located inside of the refrigerator, and a new defrost heater element or defrost timer can be purchased from an appliance parts distributor.

Let me know if you require any further assistance.

GE refrigerator model GSS23QTACC has frost buidup on the back wall and the top shelf is defrosting. What can I do?

OK the most likely reason for this on you model is the defrost heater and defrost thermostat will need replaced. The least likely would be the motherboard. The part number for the defrost heater is=> WR51X10055 onece you unplug and manually defrost the refrigerator and remove the rear panel you will be able to see the burned out defrost heater because it is covered by a glass tube. Always replace the defrost thermostat part number=> WR50X10054 when replacing heater. The only thing left would be the defrost control on the motherboard. If you need help there you had better let me know before you go and spend a arm and leg for service. You can find me here at Fixya or=> Here or here=> Sea Breeze Appliance Parts and Technical Services if you need answers let me know! Thank You, Sea Breeze

What if both sides of the refrigerator is not getting cold? And the back of the freezer side has frost.

Defrost problem. Either the defrost thermostat, defrost heater or defrost control board needs replacement. The defrost heater has to have continuity. The defrost thermostat has to have about 0 Ohms while it's cold. If both test out ok - replace defrost control board.
Part locations: Defrost heater and thermostat: under your frosted cover; control board - left upper corner of fresh food section, under the damper cover, in the middle.
Part numbers:
240554502 - control board
5303918255 - defrost heater kit
Can't find the part number for the defrost thermostat
