Hi jessica181,
Use this USB drive on some other PC.
If that works, replace USB port in your PC.In case if it doesn't work on other computer, your USB is at Fault.
You can follow one procedure :-
1) Unplugged the device
2) Un-installed all drivers associated
3) Rebooted
4) Plugged the device back in

If the error would remain, Sorry to be a bearer of bad news, You need to replace or repair your USB. You would not be able to retrieve data or information stoted in it.   There would be many hypothetical things in outer world ( Internet ) that they would be able to recover files and so on.....But nothing would work...
I know and totally understand the situation, However, these portable USB's have their own pros and cons.
I hope i have offered you the best possible solution ( Though it's hard to accept )....

Thanks for using Fixya.
Do rate the solution.

http://www.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01893277.pdf
See chapter 5, Also read the part about setting or disabling the processor sleep mode, Disable it. IF it boots normally
Go to Start. In the search box type "Device Manager" (without the quotes) - and then press Enter; this will open up the Device Manager. Double click on 'Universal Serial Bus controllers.' Now you will see a list of 'USB Root Hub'. Right-click the top one of these and select 'Properties'. Click on the Power Management tab, un-tick where it says 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' and click 'OK'. Now repeat this action on the other 'USB Root Hub' items in the list. when they are all done you can close the Device Manager, and your USB mouse and keyboard will now be able to re-awake your computer

My toshiba external harddrive usb 3.0 won't work

click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated
if this fails to fix the problem

hope this helps you

I cannot get my keyboard or my mouse to work with my dell computer. what can i do?

Please add more information to get specific assistance. Are these wireless devices? If wired, do they use USB or PS/2 connections.

For wireless devices, try replacing the batteries and resynching to the receiver. (You may want to check putting the receiver in different USB ports.)

For wired devices, disconnect and reconnect. For PS/2 devices, you will need to restart the computer to check if the devices work. For USB devices, try connecting to different USB ports.

Next step, try using a different keyboard and mouse (that work on another computer (stick to USB or PS/2 to match the current pair)). Try a wired set if the problem is with a wireless pair. If those work, continue diagnostics on the wireless keyboard and mouse. Check if the mouse and keyboard work on another computer. If they don't work with another computer, replace them.

If another USB keyboard and mouse pair don't work in any port, your USB ports may have failed. Check if even one port works enough to access the Device Manager. (Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager (Win7); similar directions in other versions of Windows) Check for a problem with the drivers (For USB ports, scroll down to the USB drivers and look for a triangle with a yellow exclamation point or red x). Try to update the driver or roll it back. If that doesn't help and one USB port works, a USB hub may solve the problem.

Otherwise if the USB or PS/2 ports do not work with any devices and the driver fix doesn't work, then I'd suspect a problem with the ports on the motherboard. Replace the motherboard/computer.

I hope this helps.

One day, I uninstalled USB Mass Storage Device along with a bunch of other ones (eg. USB Root Hub & some other ones) The USB Root Hubs and the other ones re-installed but the USB Mass Storage Device...

The hubs were most likely the USB hardware that is a part of your computer, but the USB Mass Storage Device is a part of some hardware that you had plugged in at some point (maybe a USB flash drive, maybe a USB external drive). In order to reinstall the Mass Storage Device, you have to plug that hardware back in and let it reinstall. If you aren't aware already, sometimes you plug in one device, but it installs as more than one device (it's actually supposed to). So you won't always have a one-to-one ration of hardware and installed devices, since some of them show up as more than one device. And typically, when plug a new device in for the first time, the computer can only see one device, then it instals that one device, and only then can it see the other (virtual) devices, which it then installs. The next time you plug that device in, it sees & activates all of the devices instantly & silently (not counting the little "plug in" sound it makes).

The ASUS sdre-08d1s-u is not burning cds. Common problems? fixes?

I have the exact same unit, and after about 100 burns the little guy gave out on me. If it isn't burning, I would recommend going into your device manager on your computer and checking to see if your USB hub is functioning properly. In that doesn't work, or you don't find any issues, try plugging it into a different machine to check and see if your computer is the one at fault. Often, the motor itself is the damaged unit, rather than the internal workings, so the computer says it's working fine, and lo and behold, the drive won't work. If that doesn't work out for you, then unfortunately it sounds like you're out of luck, and it would be cheaper to just purchase a new one.

How do I install CNM Core 120GB portable Hard Drive USB2 0 on my laptop?

The hard drive is plug and play, no software is required. All you have to do is plug the hard drive into a USB slot. If it doesn't work then you know the hard drive is bad and you would have to get another one.

Hello,
it is a known issue that these particular drives sometimes don't get recognized by the Operating System, after coming out of Sleep, Stand By, or Hibernation.
Simply try to disconnect and reconnect the drive again in the USB port, if this doesn't work then, Disconnect it from the USB and connect it to the Firewire. if this doesn't work then, Restart the computer.
It should solve the problem.

Hi ludovicungur,

If your device is blinking fast then it means the problem could be that your are using an incorrect mode of connection for e.g. a USB extension cord , or a USB hub to connect your external HDD.

I would suggests you to remove any external cable or USB hub and then connect the hdd directly to the port on *********** board ,if possible try changing ports and it should work.

Hope this helps ..:)

Right click on my computer and click manage then click on disk management. Find your drive and give it a drive letter. It probably just needs a drive letter so you can recognize it in my computer,,,Good Luck and let me know if this works...Darren
