A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).
A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).
However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

ABS system has nothing to do with base brake operation . ABS light on ? There are DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ,have codes checked ! No it's not a ground issue .
Check front hub & bearing assembly, the sensor isn't reading the back of the bearing assembly.
You could pull the fuse and kill the abs.You will then have the abs light on, but no abs activation at slow stops.
Check that the sensor /wire was not damaged in the repair process. As the brake system is set up in a cross pattern left front and right rear and right front and left rear the code is reading the pair that is subject to failure. This crossing of the brakes is so if you have a brake failure and loss of fluid then half of the system is still operational and will allow stopping in a straight line rather than a side skid.
Probably a faulty wheel speed sensor on one of the front wheels. you will need a computer scanner or code-checker to determine if a sensor is bad... also, (unlikely) if your car has a tire that does not match the other 3 in diameter (wrong size tire) -- that would cause the same problem.
if this issue is at low speed roughly five to ten mph it is a sign of a bad wheel bearing as the abs speed sensor reads off of a tone ring attached to the front bearings, when the bearing gets too much play it causes the sensor to receive an eratic signal making the on board computer activate the abs thinking the vehicle is sliding
