Question about Wacom ArtZ II (UD2-0608S-PC) Graphic Tablet

Vista driver solution for Wacom ArtZ II Graphics Tablet?

I have this tablet in 12x12 inch size.
I could run the tablet on Windows XP Home on my desktop machine, but I don't use that computer anymore. I have a Dell laptop with no serial ports, so I bought a serial>USB converter.

I'm running Vista on the laptop, so when I plug in the tablet naturally it asks for a driver. I only know of an XP driver which is incompatible, so the tablet doesn't move the mouse cursor. The tablet is working itself, but can't relay that information to the computer.

My boyfriend is also helping me and he suggested I set up a dual boot or a virtual XP box on my laptop so I can use the XP driver and not have to downgrade the OS. This seems to be a really fussy workaround and a waste of HDD space, especially if I wanna use the tablet while I'm doing things in Vista (I don't have Vista specific programs but, you know). Any thoughts on this? Is it time to trade in my old tablet for a USB one (and waste the money just because there's no driver)?

Is there a Vista driver at all?
I really appreciate your help!

    I have found the solution!!!

This is a solution for people with serial Wacom tablets that don't work on Vista but still work on XP.

I found a blog where a guy wrote a registry key. The key enables the XP driver to work on Vista, magically making the tablet work.
    http://www.anotherblogger.com/2007/03/31...

DO NOT fiddle with the registry if you are unsure, and always save a backup of your registry before you change anything in there (go export>save backup with todays' date on your desktop or somewhere easy to find).

The concept is simple but it's a bit techincal. You download the XP driver for the tablet on your Vista machine (uninstall anything tablet driver related before you try to install because it will fail). You then backup your registry and follow the blog instructions in adding the key to the registry. It involves making a new key under a certain hierarchy in the system, and modifying the empty string's value with the Plug 'n' Play COM details they talk about but PLEASE, don't fiddle if you have no idea. Ask a computer savvy friend to help you.

My tablet is now working after a long period of forced dormancy and am thrilled to bits I didn't have to buy a brand new tablet to fix the compatibility issue.

Have you actually tried installing the XP driver in Vista? Sometimes that does work, so no harm in trying. Use the compatibility mode in Vista to install XP drivers to increase the chances of succeeding.

Since you are running Windows Vista on your PC this is the driver you should have downloaded.

Serial cables are not hot swappable. The computer and tablet should be turned off before you plug them in.

You can try the Virtual Tablet Interface from Digitizer Technology: http://www.vtablet.com/

I haven't been able to get pressure sensitivity working in my drawing programs yet, but it does allow you to use the tablet in Windows 7.

Older ArtZ II with ADB cable won't talk to my laptop

I'm thinking this is a Mac-only tablet. The ArtZ II for Windows came with an rs232 (old mouse) port at the end of the cable, in addition to a built-in spot where the power plug attaches. You didn't mention the power plug on yours, so the Mac version of the tablet must have the power routed in through the cable.

Short answer, the reason the light isn't coming on is because the tablet isn't receiving power. If you go get a cross-platform adapter card for plugging in Mac hardware on your HP, it *might* work.

Im using a serial to usb connector to connect my artZ II tablet to my laptop..

Sorry, I figured it out, it was because the serial to usb adapter i was using needed a driver, and then my computer recognizes it as an extra serial port. So, during installation it needed to be searched for automatically from my serial ports.
