Question about Gateway NMZ-500SE Notebook

Black screen, no boot

I am trying to fix a Gateway 500SE that won't boot up. The front panel and mobo lights come on and the cpu and psu fans come on. The CD Rom is also getting power. All I get is a black screen. I checked all connection, tried different ram in different slots. I also used a multimeter to check the psu and it was fine. I next used a post card. It came up with a C7 error. It is a Phoenix mobo I think. It says Initialize note dock late. I have looked and looked on Google and can't find what this means. I am really stumped. My friend is depending on me and I have already spent my own money on memory. If you can shed some light on this, I would surely appreciate it. Thanks. Lisa

Thanks, by the way it is a desk top. That probably doesn't make any difference but for some reason it came up as a notebook on the forum. But you answered my question. I was afraid it was the motherboard but wanted to be sure. Thanks.

Does the mobo have integrated graphics? If so, you may want to try installing a new graphics card and disabling the onboard. I had the same problem with an eMachines. When I installed the AGP card, it worked just fine.

All I can tell you is that something is wrong with the motherboard, it's not memory or anything. Everybody else I've seen with that problem has replaced the motherboard and fixed the problem.
Please rate, thanks!

Dell Studio xps 8100: Motherboard changed, when booting up I get to the f2/f12 screen with have a progress bar and computer turns off?

So picture guy, LOL

Most all boards have two power plugs from PSU, (power supply unit)
a 20 or 24pin and a 4 or 8pin.

The rest from PSU are for hardware, except if you have any video cards in pci-e slots, but they are not truly part of the motherboard they are addon.

Then from the case you have power button, reset, pled, hdled.

Sata ports on mobo, cpu fan, addon fans, DVD rom.

Front panel audio.

So now you have taken one memory stick and entered the BIOS, then tried each one.

You need to check each stick.

Now you put in your hdd erase disk, boot from it and you're going to erase your hdd so it's all clean for a fresh install.

Now you throw in the windows disk and you boot from it to install windows.

Right !!!

First remove the power plug from the smps and press the power switch few time and wait for few minutes the re plug the power connector to the smps and switch on the computer if you still dont have power then you will have to check whether the smps work to test that its not enough to test the voltage in the 21/24 pin you will have to short the green wire and the black wire and see whether the smps fan is working if the fan is not working then the problem is with smps

HP media center pc ,1170n will not boot. black screen. You can hear the fan come on but black screen.

Sounds like a capacitor has blown on the motherboard, but before condemning it, check the following:
1.) Does the CPU fan turn and does the heatsink get warm after a few minutes?
(This indicates that power is at least getting to the CPU
2.) Check connections of ALL the main power connectors (ie: the 20/24 pin plug to the mainboard and the smaller 4 pin plug to the mainboard.
(If not firmly inserted will stop the board from firing up)
3.) Check the graphics card is firmly seated and test with anew graphics card to eliminate the issue being with the graphics card / check tightness of the VGA cable to monitor and card
4.) Remove all but the main power and 4 pin power plugs and try rebooting to eliminate hard drive or DVD drive failure
5.) Remove and replace each ram module in turn try booting in between
6.) If you have a spare PSU, replace the existing one and test the board using that, sometimes the PSU appears to work, but lacks power to fire up the board.

After all that, you are down to the mobo or CPU, you can try a new CPU, but I feel that the issue is with a blown capacitor or a burned circuit trace, only close inspection of the mobo will reveal bulging, leaking or blown capacitiors (small cylinder like things on the motherboard)

Pull CMOS cell from m/b for 10 minutes.
Refix RAM Memory.
Pull procesor fan and processor clean dust from all parts.
Then fix processor fan and processor.
Reconnect ATX connector to m/b.

Boot issue with gateway gt5028

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the CPU. Try fishing around to find some way to try to make the computer "squeak". Like holding a key while it boots. This makes the computer make a warning tone. If it does so, I'd imagine there is activity. If any way possible you can try to test the CPU in a different comp. Oh, and have you done any work on it recently and how long has it been operating?

I need to know which fan i need for my pc

This heatsink & fan assembly is the replacement for the Gateway 500SE & E-machine systems.
http://www.skyline-eng.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=5564
Under the window: Search by Machine click the dropdown menue & choose as follows.
Type: Gateway Desktop Parts
Series: 500
Model: Gateway 500SE Parts
Than click submit.
Click, Cooling Fan.
More socket 478 CPU fans.

Most CPU fans come with the heatsink. Try not to buy a fan that comes with a grill over it. That slows the fan down & makes the fan work harder.

Good luck!
