Question about Dell Dimension 4550 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Standby mode My Dell 4550 PC computer was accidentally put in power save mode and in order to turn it back on I had to remove the battery from the motherboard and deal with it having no correct time settings until I got a new one. It was then put in "Stand by" mode without replacing the battery and now it won't do absolutely anything at all except there is a cr4gi light that is on. I've bought a new battery for the motherboard but am unable to turn it on at all. Any suggestions?

re-seat the memory and the boards IE: NIC , Modem, Video .

Also, with power disconnected, unplug power connector off the system board for about 45 secs. put it back together , then power it up.

There should be a jumper near the battery to clear CMOS. if it just has 2 pins, take the jumper off for a few seconds, put it back and the try to power up the PC.

If it has 3 pins, move the jumper from the pins it is on to the other pins, then put it back and try to power up.

your best option is to remove the powercord from the back of the computer and wait a minute before plugging it back in and turning on your system this will delete the "standby mode save" and turn on your PC normally

Won't go into sleep mode

Which operating system ?

Sleep mode on a Windows 7 PC saves power without you having to turn your computer off and without losing any work.

This option cuts the power to your monitor, powers down the hard drive and pauses all functions until you awaken the computer from hibernation.

Whether you have a laptop, desktop or workstation, putting your computer into sleep mode will lower your electric bill and save money!

Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your desktop. In the lower right corner of the Start menu, next to the "Shut Down" button, is a button labeled with a small, right-pointing arrow. Mouse over the arrow.

The Shut Down menu appears.

Point at "Sleep" and click on this option.

Your Windows 7 computer goes into sleep mode.

Wake your computer from sleep mode by jiggling the mouse.

There may be a delay of a few seconds before your hardware powers on.

All of your open programs are still open and your work is intact, just as you left it before the computer entered sleep mode.

Configure your Windows 7 PC to go into sleep mode automatically when it is not used for a certain amount of time.

Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Click "System and Security."

Click "Power Options."

A menu opens.

Click on "Choose when the computer sleeps" and select the number of minutes of inactivity. You can also set a separate time interval to put your monitor into sleep mode.

If you set both to 10 minutes, then your PC and monitor will automatically go into sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity

Your Computer in sleep mode

First, save all of your work. Information in computer memory is not saved while your computer is on standby.

From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then Power Management.

Click Standby Beside When I Push the Power Button.

Push the Power button.

Automatically Putting Your Computer on Standby

Save all work before leaving your computer.

From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel.

Double-click Power Management.

Set the times that you want your system to go on standby, to shut off the monitor and to shut off the hard disks.

Click OK. Your computer will go on standby according to the schedule you have entered.

Putting Your Computer in Hibernation

From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel.

Double-click Power Settings.

Click on the Advanced tab.

At the When I Push the Power Button On My Computer screen, click Hibernate.

Click the Power button.

Hope this helps.

Dell Dimension 4550 will not power on but standby light on.

In all my years of fixing computers, 98% of the time it is the power supply, 2% the motherboard and 0% the switch. Just because the standby light is on does not indicate that the power supply is functioning correctly. The power supply puts out many different voltages....5v, 12v, 1.3v, and 3.3v. If the 3.3 is working then the standby light will come on but if any of the others are not working correctly then the computer won't turn on at all. You can check the switch by checking the resistance of the two wires that the switch are attached to using a multimeter. When the button is depressed, it should go to 0 and when it is not depressed it should be at 1. I would suggest swapping out with a known working power supply to verify the issue.

My Dell Inspiron 1520 seems to use a lot of battery power, even when the lid is closed, and nothing is running. Is there any way to save battery power, without going into standby mode, or turning off the...

How long does your battery usually last? If it lasts 2 hours or more, that's normal for a notebook computer. The standby mode and turning off of hard drives is what notebooks are designed to do to give you more battery life. If you have to have it on and available all the time without going into standy mode, you'll need to get used to charging it every couple of hours. If you want to get more battery life, try the following options:
1) have the display turned off when not in use (this setting can be changed where you set up your screensaver)
2) turn off the wireless function (if available) when not in use
3) have the computer go to standby mode after 10 or 15 minutes of inactivity.
4) lower the brightness of your display

All of the above assumes that you're getting a decent charge and can use the notebook unplugged for 2 hours or more. Naturally, over time, notebook batteries wear down and don't hold a charge as well as they once did. If your notebook is a few years old and you're only getting an hour or so on a full battery, then it is probably time to invest in a new battery. If your notebook is new and you are getting this short battery life, contact Dell for a replacement battery as yours may be defective.

One last thing about notebook batteries. They are designed to be charged up and run down. If you leave your computer plugged in to a/c power all the time while you are using your computer, this greatly speeds up the wearing down of the battery. Whenever possible, you should fully charge your battery and then run the battery down to 10% or less before plugging it back in. This ensures that you get the most battery life on a consistent basis.

Hope this help. Please take a moment to rate the solution. Thanks.

Black Screen / Computer Stays in Standby Mode

Completely remove the battery and unplug the power cord for a few minutes. Reinsert battery and power up. You can also hit F8 when starting and see if you can boot into safe mode.
