What is actually the switch (is a touch switch) inside the tv. The button the user touch is a plastic same as the black or gray frame. a visible inspection can tell you if this plastic is doing the job because if you touch it actually clicks and you feel doing the function. if is different the way it works than the other buttons. That is the reason why the menu appears because the plastic is damage. the other possibility is the electronic switch itself is now close forever but inside. if those two problems are not the visible solution. a deepest trace has to be track to diagnose the final reason of the problem this is the micro controller
(by the way: isn't the menu button (remote control) dented or probably pushed in by accident)

I have a Phillips LCD tv model #42PF7421D/37. and

I know on the plasma TV's it was a matter of updating or downloading and re-installing the firmware/software for the TV to fix the issue. Go to the following page and if the model you have is indeed a 42PF7421D/37 download the software on the page. Make sure you follow the installation instructions to update the software otherwise the set will become a 150 lb paper weight.

No data is sent to the screen

When the screen goes completely black, shine a very bright flashlight closely at the screen. If you can see the image, then the most likely problem is that the backlight inverter has failed.

The inverter is a circuit board that works like a flourescent light ballast. If the inverter fails, there is no backlight, and the screen is black.

Since the invertor is a high-voltage component, I would also listen for any unusual sounds associated with the failure: e.g. buzzing, whistling, popping.

To rule out some sort of connection failure, see if you can recreate the failure mode when using the TVs internal setup menu. The setup menu does not rely on any external inputs....of course neither does the volume control or channel indicator on the screen.

My Philips flat screen tv model 37PFL5332D/37 will not come on...what should I do to reset my tv

The only way to reset it is to leave it unplugged for 24 hours. If resetting it doesn't help let it turn on, you may have to replace the power supply

Menu on a Philips-32PF7320A-37B

try leaving the TV unplugged overnight (at least 8 hours). this should reset televison to origional defaut settings. If you are using a remote, you should use new batteries or put it in another room and use menu buttons on the tv itself it is equiped.

Philips 32PF7320A black screen

If the power lamp is flashing 5 times when it does this, you may need a new power supply. Otherwise, I would suspect a bad (solder) connection in the power supply.
