Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Ethernet connection is possibly at fault

I have a simular problem where the 500Gb WD MYBOOK was working fine now the computer can't find the path. I have tried everything from rebooting the drive, rebooting the computer and remapping the drive. I also have a 1Tb WD MYBOOK Edition drive that works fine throught the ethernet connection. What I have noticed is that the Ethernet light doesn't light up at the back of the 500Gb drive when I plug the ethernet cable into the socket. It does for the 1Tb drive. Does this indicate that the 500Gb drive has a problem making a ethernet connection to the computer. Is there a connection plug come loose in the interal side of the case?

WD5000MT not recognized

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

I can not link up with My Book World Edition 500GB

That is because the MyBook is set with a default IP address of 192.168.1.257. You will have to put a static IP address in that subnet range in order to be able to see the external drive. Hope this helps....

WD Hard Drive Not Detecting

Yes, this can be done via the user web interface, by typing in mybookworld or wdstorage into the web browser and the shared storage manager should come up. If you go to general setup there should be an option to update network settings.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 420 Desktop computer, running Vista, from Dell, including a WD 500GB MyBook external hard drive. The power button did not function from the get-go, but I was able to copy...

Unfortunately if there is no driver for Vista, then your out of luck. Since Vista is a widely used OS and getting bigger, then the MyBook manufactures must create a Vista driver soon or they will be in danger of going out of business. Just wait and periodically check the MyBook website for new drivers.

How do you set up multiple WD Anywhere users on the network to share the same MyBook World Edition

hey,

-No WD Anywhere allows 5 users I think.
This could only be the solution, if you installed WD Anywhere on other PCs before

Check out the MioNet site, think they give options for new users.
if this is not the problem, I don't have a solution by now.

bye
