Question about G-Technology G-Drive Combo - 500GB FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 - Black 90801401B Hard Drive

1 Answer

Drive will not boot up, but makes funny repetitious noise instead.

Hello, I recently tried turning on my G-Drive Combo 500 drive, and I hear a strange sound coming from the unit. It's a repetitious 4-beat tone that runs continuously, and the drive will not boot up as well as mount. I tried changing the power cord, and there was no change. Could you please provide any information that will help correct this problem. The drive is hardly used, but I don't believe it is still covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Thank you very much. Alan

Usually when the drive makes a weird sound it means it's going out .If you can try plugging it into another device and see if it does the same thing . Good Luck

SOURCE: my external hard drive makes a funny noise when I turn it on

Sounds like the hard drive is having an issue. It may be too late but you can try to freeze your hd and recover the data.

SOURCE: When I turn on the G-Drive the little light turns

It sounds like the drive is not completing the connection. First, try restarting your computer. Then, try another port or cable, or connect to another computer. Another possibilty is a damaged directory, this will be apparent by the drive showing in Disk Utility, but the volume name is greyed out or generic. If so, then DiskWarrior can often repair damaged directories and allow the drive to mount.

The drive is making a funny clicking noise. Imac doesn't see the drive.

The funny clicking noise you are hearing is usually from a mechanical failure within the hard drive. The drive will need to be replaced at this point. If the drive is still under warranty you will want to process an RMA.

The Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500 GB SATA Hard Drive External falled and now is not more recognized by my pc Win XP

Hello

OK, you need to let me know if the drive spins up, you should be able to hear it. Also, you need to have a listen if the drive makes a clicking noise.

Please be so kind tom let me know.

If the drive makes a clicking noise the drive is done, you will need to take it to a recovery institution to recover the data.

If the drive does not spin up, the circuit board or the power cable might be broken.

Hope this can be of help.

Kind regards
Andrea

Is it an external drive?

If it is, open the external hard drive cover, remove the hard disk inside, and fix it back. Try again and let's see what happens.

If it still does not work, insert the external drive into the computer, feel the hard drive if it spins/vibrate from inside or if it makes a cracking noise.

If it spins/vibrate, it means the hard disk is still working. In that case, you have to get another external drive case/cover.

But if it makes cracking noise, then it means the hard drive is damaged and you need to get another one.

Lastly, if its not an external drive, the same applies because, its still all about hard drive.

I wish you all the best.

HARD DRIVE NOT DETECTED

I would just try and come out straight to you, that your harddrive has very much likely to have crashed. Hard Drives are generally Very Fragile because of the Tiny Read/Write head that is inside.
The moment it drops on the floor it might have got broken. and that is why you are hearing the funny noise...although it will still keep spinning because the voltage is still being supplied onto it, but you might not be able to read or write anything onto it.
Sorry.
Hope this helps.
Goodluck.

Western Digital WD 1200VE; 120 GB external hard drive unable to boot

You need to send it to a data recovery house like Drive Savers. The prices range from 500 to 3000 USD for data recovery and they can't guarantee 100 percent success. The platters need to be removed in a clean room and placed in a unit to read the data. They then copy the data to another drive or to optical disks. Unfortunately when the drive hit the floor the drive sustained physical damage hence not starting up.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Cheers.
