Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Fujifilm A850 digital camera showing leaflike image on screen

Seeing you're a bit unspecific I can't give a particularly specific answer, but my qualified guess would be you've by accident have gotten grease into the lens, hence the leaf like shapes (even when you're previewing photos, before taking them).

I'd recommend getting a professional looking at it, or buying a new one, since compact cameras are not to be meddled with.

Zoom error - samsung digital camera 4.0 mega pixels

Most likely the lens has been knocked out of aligment. If you look head on at the lens. The gap should be the same all the way around. You can try and "click" it back in to place yourself. Otherwise the camera is in need of repair, which based on most peoples level of experience should be left to a professional.
Thanks,
Lee

Pull the lens away from the body until it clicks and then turn it clockwise while looking at the front of the camera.
