Chinese steel. use a grade 5 or grade 8 bolt and it won't shear.

My craftsman 5hp tiller hit large rock, tines stopped, loud noise followed and now pull string won't budge. Why?

most tillers are equipped with a shear pin down by the tines. for this reason. if you hit something it will shear the pin and not do damage to your machine. it don't sound like that happened here. make sure the tines are disengaged. if the rope wont pull it may have sheared the flywheel key. there are videos on you tube that will show you how to take off the cover, the flywheel and check to see if this has happened. it may have locked the engine up at the worst scenario.

My tiller keeps shearing pins for tines

-Try to use number 8 grade. possibly it hit stone or hard surface
very often that's why it keep shearing the lock pin.

Good Luck

Husqvarna shear pins break within minutes

if we are speaking about the shear pins on the tines, the ground is the problem and you need to begin your first pass on a more shallow setting and progress to a deeper setting gradually. if we are speaking about the shear pins on the tires w/o engaging the tines then these should not be breaking and I recommend that the tiller be examined by an authorized dealer.

How do you set the timing on a 1988 5 hp briggs and srratton motor

The shear pin holds the magneto/flywheel in one particular position. So if the motor ran well when the pin was sheared it should still be set correctly. If you want to confirm, then it's usually a gap set on a lobe of the crank shaft.

Tiller blades barely turns and you have to hold down forward lever to get them to keep turning

belt worn and too loose, maybe pulley slipping on the shaft, shear bolts or pins broke on tines. worse case sheared key in tranny case for drive gears.

I have 2 and they are fairly new anyway when I engage tines they work fine until they hit dirt. then they stop and have a loud clicking noise. I'm sure that they are more than likely stripped out but can...

You might have just sheared a shear pin that's how some of those are designed. Check around the shaft area that connects to the engine you might find that a pin is sheared if so, pound out and replace. Sometimes also called shear bolts. Good Luck...

Tines don't turn

There is usuall a shear pin on the shaft so that when it hits something serious it will shear off preventing the engine from being ruined. I would look for a shear pin somewhere.
