Was the LCD pushed on or hit in anyway? Damage liek that is almost always irreversible. If you have a warranty for the LCD now's the time to use it.
If you have any tech savy family or friends you can purchase laptop screens on auction sites fairly cheap($100-200), well as opposed to buying or paying the manufacturer (usually $500+) And do the repairs themselves.

If not then try a local repair shop as they will know best what to do.

HP Compaq Presario R4000 (PN495AV) PC Notebook How

Yes, go to Start>Control panel>Power Options. There also should be a screen brightness key on your key board, that looks like a sun shining, with arrows pointing up & down. To use that key, hit the FN key, right next to the Ctrl key. Push & hold the FN key, while pushing the up arrow. That should increase the brightness of your display. Good luck.

you may need to set your backlight settings. it could be done under power settings in your operating system or you may do it manually by pressing fn + up arrow key (or down arrow key).
