Oil from the drum has ran off over the drum encoder position sensor.

Take the right cover off and find the fan. Remove it and loosen the clear plastic sensor cover underneatch. Clean the sensor and generally with Isopropyl and Q-tip.

Clean the nearby wires and anything that might be transporting more oil back to your sensor

wrinaldo...I'm not going to get too elated yet, but definitely tomorrow. While it wasn't easy based on the description to get to the sensor, I did manage to get this puppy apart and clean the sensor. I might add that it's the "film" that runs through the sensor that needed to be cleaned, and as you mentioned, any other pieces, including the backing that the film adheres to. In our case, I assume this happened when we moved our office and the printer was perhaps put in a compromising position, although I don't really know, since I didn't move it. There is one tricky bit, and that's that there appears to be an alignment mark on the film. Having not paid attention to it when I removed the film, I could only assume that the printer was smart enough to set itself to that particular position when I powered it down, and that the only logical thing to do was center the line in the the middle of the sensor when I put it back. Would love to know if that's indeed true, or if it does not matter. In any case, all of the test pages printed properly, and subsequent prints have so far been fine. Since I couldn't print anything prior to this that wasn't blurred, I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that this indeed fixed our problem. So, am I correct that the oily film simply throws the sensor out of what, so it basically doesn't get things "lined up" properly (lay man's description admittedly). Also, I notice that there is a light gray ring around the outer rim of the film...I assume it serves a purpose, would love to know what.

In any case, thank you. It seems you earned that "guru" status.

Shadow Printing on a xerox Phaser 8560. Have changed the Maint Roller and done the various cleaning cycles

The printer requires a maintenance kit. (95% chance anyways)
I would suggenst the extended life maintenance kit (10,000 page lifespan) part number 108R00676 to correct this issue.
You can usually get these where you get your solid ink cartridges.

My xerox phaser 8560 is printing muted color

First off on your screen access troubleshooting, and perform the remove light strips and also remove smears and skips.
Next go to, under support and drivers enter 8560 in the search box. then go to the support page.
You want to look up the procedures for TEC color correction. And follow those steps.
If you are using a generic ink then, all bets are off in getting true color reproduction.

Phaser 8560 not printing RED correctly

Even though Media Sciences ink is not compatable and is subject to burning and clogging your printhead, the most telling symptom you listed is the red shavings. This indicates the ink is not releasing from the drum properly. This version of solid ink has a problem with the cams on the maintenance camshaft cracking and this causes the maintenance kit roller to not oil the drum properly. You will also hear an odd noise either grinding, groaning or a slight tearing sound. This requires a technician to resolve as replacing the camshaft is not an enduser job. Print quality issues are either the printhead or related to the camshaft failing, there are a few others but they wouldn't exhibit the symptoms you listed.

My print jobs keep coming out with smears in certain spots and now the entire print job is blurred. I've cleaned it several times. How do I correct that myself?

If the entire page is blurred, it is probably a dying wave amp board. Time to start shopping because the repair bill is more than a new 8560.

Blurred Images

You don't need to remove it.

Remove the right cover, and the fan on that side. Partially remove the clear plastic cover of the encoder and go in with Isopropyl and Qtips.

Also clean the nearby wires and anything that could transport the oil

Xerox 8560 outputs Cleaning Pages several times a week. The unit is never turned off and only goes into "sleep" mode. Last time it woke up at 1:00 AM and went through the noisy cycle and output the...

There is nothing you can do about the cleaning page. And if its only using 20% of your ink, you're luck normally its 25% of the ink. This is simply how the machine works. Nothing can be done. The Xerox employee was simply trying to give you something to try, but it won't change anything!

Xerox Phaser 8560

On the right side of the machine. There is an encoder mounted to the end of the drum shaft. They are known to become contaminated with the silicon lubricant from the maintenance kit. That causes the drum to spin off speed somewhat randomly. You can take it off the shaft and clean it well with alcohol. Sometimes they need replaced, but if it is as intermittent as you are suggesting cleaning it should take care of your problem. Not all that uncommon.

Xerox Phaser 8560 Waste INk

Although I agree totally, the anwer is no. Althought it appears black, take a piece of it an use it like a crayon. It is a combination of all the color inks combined. So if you take and rub it on a piece of paper it will be a purple color. So threfore would not create proper colors.
Now to save ink, Do not turn the printer off at all. Just let it use its own sleep mode. The power consumption is intermittent to keep the print head warm and uses about the same ammount of electricity as your refridgerator light bulb. The reason being, when you turn off a solid ink printer, it purges the print head of ALL old ink and dumps it into the waste tray. That is part of those weird noises you hear when you cycle up the machine, one is a compressor emptying the print head.
Also, honestly, althogh I am not sure what you are using the machine for. But you would be wise to put that product on a pay per page maintenance agreement. That includes all ink and all service. Some of the parts for those printers are super expensive.
I will say one thing you can do with that waste ink, if you know anyone who has children, they can use them as purple crayons..
