Thank you, Mark Z! My Pioneer PD-M551 would just stop reading the CD, usually near the end of the 4th or 5th disk, and then sometimes it wouldn't read any disks or maybe only the first one or two. I observed that the white ribbon cable was most contorted near near the end of the 4th through 6th disk (also discovered the disks are read proceeding from the center outward, unlike vinyl records). I unfolded the ribbon, massaged it and left it loose and unfolded and that fixed it (at least, temporarily). The PNP-1343 ribbon cable from Pioneer costs $11 but with shipping and handling it is over $30 so I haven't bought it yet.
To my surprise, CD cleaner disc did it for me. It's a very old Philips one with a bit of furry stuff on the track side. I was amazed it even played, but it did and after letting it run for 20 secs, tried proper discs and it works fine. And this Pioneer PD-M603 is at least 15 years old!Looks like it would be hard to clean the lens manually because it's a long way inside.
With the top off the unit, you can turn the tray gears manually for slow eject function. Unplug unit before touching anything inside, check internal fuses. Sometimes the little ball bearings that keep the cart trays separated come out causing tray jams and shorts. Make sure your tray retracts all the way into the player flush with the face plate when loading, gently push it in while retracting for those occasional no-read situations. (Also for Denon that takes these same carts). Also note that the CDs go in the Upside Down position.
