The Downloader software that comes with the camera refuses to open after installing. We have re-installed already once, same result. Windows recognizes it as a camera but can't find the photos on it and therefore will not download them either.

Connecting the camera is not the issue, I think it's the SD. I have a SanDisk Ultra II 2.0 GB that will not upload via my SanDisk 8-1 Card Reader. Nor can I copy the photos to my Epson P-2000 photo viewer. My Mac just doesn't pick up the card (over 700 photos) from either peripheral. However, my SanDisk 1.0 GB, used in a Canon SD20, has no problem loading to either device.

The point is, I do not want to have to connect my camera via USB cable to my Mac to upload photos (that DOES work), as I have limited USB ports; I want to use the Reader. Suggestions are welcomed heartily. Thanks, Josh

Hi, Most present day digital cameras are recognizable by a Windows PC as an external removable drive. You have to connect the camera using a USB cable (in some case, a firewire cable) to any of the USB ports of your computer. Give your machine a second or two to recognize and auto-install the needed drivers/software. The PC normally auto displays content of the camera (now recognized as possibly drive "E" or something). Thereafter it is a matter of copy/paste or drag-0n-drop to your preferred folder in your PC (more often My Pictures inside My Documents). Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turnedout or should you need furtherinformation. Good luck and kind regards.

SOURCE: wont download onto my computer

I had to fix a similar problem with a friends camera. If the lens dosn't come out when you turn it on, You will have to, or get some one, to open the camera up. there are lots of tiny screws to remove. You will find one of the ribbon cables has popped the retaining clip, and you will have to snap it back into place. Note: put a piece of tape over the Flash wire inside or you get a good zap from it.

Try using a card reader instead of the camera.

While downloading to computer it loads all photos everytime

If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

My Pentax S40 will no longer download photos onto my computer

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Since you didn't say what program(s) you're using I can't tell you anything about where it/they may have downloaded your photos to.

How do i rename pictures so that my computer won't think they are duplicates?

Rename the photos on the computer before you download the new photos.
Create a new folder (say Photos1) in another area away from where the existing photos are located in your computer and move all the existing existing into the new Photo1 folder.
Then when you download the new photos from your camera then there will be no conflict or the need to rename the existing photos.
Later, you will need to create another folder and move the current photos into this folder before you download the next lot of photos from your camera.

Sounds like you're switching the same card between cameras. Rule card per camera. Format the card in the camera it is to be used in. There is no Rule #2.
