Question about Maytag Neptune MAH6500A Front Load Washer
After pressing the start switch the washer only stays on for a few seconds than off.
Most will tell you that you have a failed start switch... I disagree with most. What you have is a failed water valve. Yup. A water valve. See, there's a thermistor sensing unit on the inlet valve. When this has failed, the washer will display the symptoms you describe. Unfortunately you can't just replace the thermistor, the whole valve has to be changed out. It's easier than you might imagine.
All you need is;
2.) Phillips screwdriver
3.) 5/16" nut driver/socket
4.) 1/4" nut driver/socket
UNPLUG THE WASHER BEFORE DOING THIS REPAIR!
Open the washer door and remove the 4 screws at the door hinges and remove the door. On the opposite side, you'll see 4 more screws. Remove them, too. Now, on the top panel... open the soap dispenser lid and you'll see 4 screws there. Remove them AND the dispenser lid.
Now grasp the top left and right of the front panel and pull forward to about a 45 degree angle then lift it off of the clips at the bottom. OK, look closely at what you have revealed... just below the top panel you should see two 5/16" screws that are holding the top panel retainer clips (they're shaped like an upside down "L"). Remove those screws and remove the clips. Now lift the top panel just like the hood on a car.
At this point, you'll see the valve located at the back left. Obviously, you'll need to turn the water off and remove the hoses (remember which is Hot and Cold, OK?) There will be one screw (1/4") holding the valve in place, remove it then remove the valve. Remember where the wires go, then remove them too.
All that's left is to install a new valve (part number 22003834) and rebuild the washer in the reverse order of disassembly.
