Question about HP Pavilion Ze4805us Notebook

Upgrading hdd in hp ze4805us to 250GB WD -- Won't Boot

I used Partition Magic to copy the Boot Magic and C-drive partitions from the OEM 60GB drive to a WD 250GB drive.  everything copied w/o errors.  I use PM 8.0 and set the C-drive partition on the WD to ACTIVE (it is already a primary partition.  Swap the drives (WD is now internal to the laptop) and attempt boot.  I get following msgs:
loading BootMagic  error#8050  no default menu item available to boot Boot Magic will now boot to your home partition Correct and run Boot Magic config program press any key to continue [Here is where I press the infamous "any" key] then I get: Invalid system disk Replace disk and press any key
If I go into BIOS first (Phoenix KAM1.60) I can see a setting that can't be changed in the hdd section that says max capacity 137GB.  Also the LBA mode control is enabled and ULTRA DMA is mode 5.   LBA Format total sectors  268435455 multi-sector transfers 16 sectors 32-bit i/o DISABLED Transfer mode  FPIO 4 DMA 2 SMART monitoring  ENABLED
I would appreciate any help you can offer.  I tried hp for another issue a couple of times and now I can't get my 802.11g to work anymore (at least no DHCP, etc.)  Thanks. -Kyle

    The Boot Magic partition is about 556 MB and the c-drive partition is about 51 GB.  I left them the same size on the new hdd as the old one.  I did not create a partition out of the remainder, i just left it unallocated.  Thanks for the idea.

Since your bios says theirs a limit to HDD capacity you may want to try making the 250GB disk into 2 smaller partitions. Then extract your OS image to the first partition.

Install a partition manager program like
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
open it and you will see the entire hard disk. In there either create another partition in the unallocated space or add it to the D partition.

Hello Private672, Hi, If you have no important documents on the HDD or has been back up already, the full hdd size can be edited when you install another windows on it. there is a portion in the installation where you can delete and edit the partition. There are other free software utility on the internet for downloads to edit and low level your hard drive to get back the full size. among these are Partition Magic, Disk Manager. do a google search

1.plz check your hardisk about any virus..
scan your hardisk a good antivirus

and check your partition type FAT or NTFS, FAT32 only support maximum file size 3gb
if FAT32 please convert as NTFS.

Only 125G is showing

A disk-drive can be "partitioned".

It's possible that your disk-drive has two partitions:
* a "primary" partition of 125G,
* an "extended" partition of the "other" 125G,
with a "logical" drive allocated within the extended partition.

Inside your laptop, you would have seen 'C:' as the "primary", and 'D:' as the "logical" partition, and 'E:' as your CD/DVD drive.

So, if UBUNTU is only looking at the "primary" partition, it will report 125GB.

Connect the drive as a "slave" to some desktop computer, and check for having multiple partitions, and do your backup from that system.

I have 2 HDD's in my PC - both with Win XP Prop

Boot.ini is correct, but looks default is booting from Disk2 and partition 1 which is your G:\ 500 GB.

Try Copying boot.ini from c:\boot.ini to g:\boot.ini It might help

In your example I see missing "\" after partition(1), may be typing mistake, but in real time can generate error.

You boot.ini looks exactly same in both drive c:\ & G:\

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="GUY DRIVE XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Note: boot.ini will be hidden and readonly file. You need to unhide the file and remote the read only option and then only you will be able to save the boot.ini file

Hope this helps

Rules for runing partitiom magic

The FixYa Team

Thanks for the respone

I have been informed by the VISTAHEAD admin. that vista can not be partitioned by more than 4 parts.
I used the shrink function available in the Vista computer manger , rename the DVD drive label, and labeling the new partitions, then format them as NTFS, then reboot twise for taking the configuration setup and every thing is o.K. without the need for the partition magic.
Now i have only 4 patitions. But didn't know why is this limit?
Beside that i read that the partition magic v8.0 cannt partiton the vista O.S main drive.

Thanks

try using a partitioning utility like gparted, pmagic, partition magic etc. this will tell you whether your drive is full, partitioned, how much is used and if the partition takes up the full disk. also, try doing scandisk on it to see if there are errors and to get the errors fixed

Samsung 200gb hdd

When u bought a new hdd, it shud not have any partition on it. but in ur case, I assume u have formatted it to ntfs but no operating system is installed in it.

If u want to make the new hdd as slave and have another old hdd as primary, that have already an operating system installed in it, then the problem shud be hdd boot priority in bios. Enter ur bios and check for hdd boot priority and put the old hdd to the top most order, then restart. this shud fix the problem.

If u installed OS in ur new hdd (win xp),
1) ntldr or ntdetect.com is missing on root dir. (c:\). If u have another computer that works and have xp installed, just put this new hdd along with the current hdd and boot to windows. Copy ntldr and ntdetect.com to your new hdd. Or another way is just repair using windows xp boot cd.
2)the windows partition is not set 'active'. to set active, boot into winxp setup and press 'r'. this will lead to recovery console. type ur passwrod for admin (def=none). use diskpart command to set active. for easy way, put the new hdd to another computer. boot to windows. rightclick my computer, choose manage. on left pane select disk manager. rightclick on ur partition, then set active.

Hope this help

Seagate momentus 3 60gb problem

What software did you use for the cloning?
Ghost is the preferred method.
Be sure to choose a disk to disk clone, not a partition clone.
It sounds like you may have created a 20G partition and left 40G unallocated.
Partition Magic may also take care of the problem, if you have access to a copy.
