Question about NEC Versa LX Notebook

Computer wont boot up

Hi i have a nec versa m400 laptop running winxp, it was dropped from a low height and afterwards wouldnt boot up, it sounds like it is going to for all of 10 secs then does nothing, although i did note that after it was dropped the wireless ligh twas now on when it wasnt before. I took the laptop to a computer repair shop and the tech tested the hard drive and the ram, both were fine, so he assumes it is the mother board and that it isnt worth fixing, i brought the laptop home and decided to try it one more time, before i turned it on tho, i pushed a button/knob thingie on the bottom righthand side and a plastic card thingie with 4 empty rectangle shapes popped out, i looked at it, wondering what the heck it was, pushed it back in, pushed the start button and lo and behold the computer booted up and i was able to use it normally for 1 hr, then i shut it down thinking whatever the problem was it had solved itself, but when i tried to start it again in the morning, im back to it doing nothing, i have tried fiddling with the plastic card thingie again (yeah im real computer literate) but still no joy. so now im not sure that it is a motherboard issue, and that instead it maybe something else that would be reasonably simple to fix if i knew how, any suggestions would be gratefully recieved. Thanks Daisy

Hi MAD ICE, thanks for the suggestion, but no luck sorry, i have been surfing the net for answers (thank goodness i have the use of another computer in the mean time) and i now know what the funny plastic thingie is ... lol. it is just a place holder, as MPetro pointed out, but even when i take it out of the slot, the computer still doesnt boot up. so i am picking that i am going to have to go to another repair shop, i was hoping to solve the problem with little cost to myself, as money is tight these days, as it is for everyone, but hopefully it wont be an expensive job. Thanks again.

Hi MPetro302, thanks for you suggestion, i took the place holder out and tried rebooting the computer and nothing happened, so i left it for about 20mins then tried again and it turned on, so i turned it off again, then turned straight back on, i did this 3 times with the computer successfully turning on each time, but after i had left it on for about an hour i turned it off again, and the next time i turned it on, again it wouldnt start up and hasnt started since. a friend and me tried to take the back cover off but since neither of us are in any way computer minded, we decided after undoing a number of screws and still not successfully being able to removed the cover, that prehaps we should leave it for a professional, would a problem with the motherboard cause the same symptons? or do you think it likely to be something else? its just that i dont want to pay for another technician to look at it only to tell me the same thing, anyways thank you for your time and answer. take care, Daisy.

Take it to another Repair shop and explain this to them. It is likely that a connection inside has become loose or cracked. also that card you removed is just a place holder for a pcmcia type card connection and your laptop will work fine with it or without it.

If you cant afford the repairs have a tech savy family member or frien remove the cover to inspect it.

Yoy might take this time to maybe think about purchasing a new one. I can suggest a couple online sites and both are excellent retailers and are 1/3'rd the price of places like best buy, you can oder a catalog from them too.

I have purchased 2 laptops and 1 desktop from both are excellent. all my upgrades are from memory is really cheap, say online retailer 2GB is 40$ at bestbuy cheaper/generic memory 2GB would cost alsmot 200$

You can also purchase an external 2.5" harddrive case for 10-20$.
with that you can remove your laptops hard drive and connect it to a desktop and search it to retrive any important files or pictures.
Afterwards format it and use it for a backup device.

How to enable Secondary IDE in NEC VERSA M400

I presume you have bought a secondary hard drive and want to fit it to your laptop.
Firstly fit the new drive, it then needs to be initialised, this can be done by running Control Pane, select Administrative tools, select Computer Management. Run Discmanagement and find the new hard drive, initialise it and format it.
That should solve your problem.

How to update ram on NEC Versa M400?

I don't know what a NEC Versa M400 is, but i'm prosuming youve checked under the memory pannel on the bottom of the laptop? if the rams not under one of the pannels on the bottom then you will find it under the keyboad.then just release the 2 clips on either side of the chip & it will pop up. pull it out & put the new one in,you'll see they only go in one way.

Nec versa e2000 laptop

Joelmar, you are incorrect. This model was also sold with xp, I'm typing this on one. If you still have the original Hdd and have not formatted the recovery partition, boot up the laptop whilst holding the f11 key. This will start NEC recovery and allow you to reinstall the system, drivers included. Back up first!

External dvd writer

You would be able to boot from the external drive but you will not be able to run an operating system from it. It would allow you to install another operating system if that is what you mean? If i understand you correctly though, you would like to say perhaps, have windows xp on your laptop and maybe run windows vista on your external? Maybe get to choose which one to run. This is not possible. Sorry. I hope this helps!
