Question about Canon PowerShot SD400 / IXUS 50 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Battery dies fast

I have a Canon Powershot S400 camera, which comes with its own rechargeable battery. The battery drains after 2 pictures. Is there a reason as to why this happens? Is there a setting on the camera I could change to stop this?

There is no setting, that sounds just like a faulty Li ion rechargeable battery. Test the camera with alkaline batteries , if it works fine get a replacement rechargeable battery. Ensure that batteries are fully charged first.

What type battery for powershotA480

Your camera uses 2 AA batteries, but if you use Alkaline batteries they will drain very fast. You are better off buying rechargeable batteries as you can recharge them several hundred times, cheaper than Duracell or Energizer Alkaline batteries in the long run. If you buy rechargeable batteries make sure you get a high mA capacity the higher the mA which stands for Milliamp Per Hour the longer the battery will last in terms of a charge.

Battery life

The rechargeables are only meant to last a couple years maximum (pretty good that you got three out of them). Also rechargeable NiMH's have approximately 5 times the power of standard alkaline batteries. Alkaline batteries should only be used in emergencies in digital cameras as they will only last for a short while before they are drained (as you've discovered).

The obvious solution is that it's time to consider purchasing a new set of rechargeable NiMH batteries. Look on the package for a power rating of at least 2,500 mah. Avoid batteries that do not list the power rating as they are generally inferior batteries.

For both of you, this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Canon powershot A 460

Which batteries are you using? If they are rechargables, make sure they are not drained because you can overcharge them to the point that they discharge. If they are regular AA batteries, make sure they are reputable brand, and if they are, then use a pencil eraser to gently clean the battery contacts inside the camera. If none of these steps work, the camera may have an excessive battery drain issue and needs service. You should call Canon and see if you can have it repaired under one year manufacturer's warranty, or if you are beyond the year warranty, ask about the Canon Loyalty program where you can upgrade your camera for a deep discount for another model with a 6 month warranty.

Hope this helps!

Memory Card Error-Won't take Pictures

Hi momincali - I posted a solution for someone that seemed to have the same problem as you. If you didn't see it, this is what I wrote:

I had the same problem on my PowerShot S400 as well as I couldn't reformat the compact flash when using the feature on the camera. The solution that worked for me was reseating a small battery (about the size of a watch battery) in side the camera. To get to it you have to take the case apart.
I found this solution by googling and typing:
powershot S400 E50 error
I'm not sure if this site will allow me to add the web link - but this link had a picture of the camera and where the battery is located.
http://www.pinoyhack.com/2006/09/14/canon-powershot-s400-fix/

I decided to try it, since I figured I had nothing to loose, becaues otherwise I'd be looking for buying a new camera. To my surprise it fixed my problem, but I do not know if this is a permanent fix. If you do try this - take note of where each of the screws come from. There were 4 different size screws around the case.

There seem to be a lot of complaints about this problem though.

Good luck.

Memory card error

Solution:
1 set date to 31-12-2030 23h59 and switch camera off.
2 wait two minutes, day will be 01-01-2003 and camera asks you to set the date
3 take away memory card
4 set the date to today
5 insert memory card again
Now your error should be solved.

Canon Powershot S400 take blown out outdoor pictures

The onlything i can sugest you try is to reset the camera. Im not sure how to do this other then to remove the rechargable battery and the button battery. Its a little round silver disk looking thing. Let it sit over night and see if it resets. Have you tried snapping a picture from every mode? TV,AV,SCN,Manual and Auto? Do they look washed out on your computer? Can you take a picture at 640X480 (S) and upload it so i can see what it looks like? Post a link to the image.
