Question about Psion Series 3c

1 Answer

Internal memory loss

I have a Psion series 3mx palmtop, all the information stored on it was saved to the internal memory. I haven't used my palmtop for about a month, during that time un beknownst to me both the backup and main batteries have gone dead. I have replaced the batteries but the palmtop has lost its memory, its reverted back to date 01/01/1996. Is there any way of retreaving my information?
A friend of mine had a series 3a and when she didn't use hers for 6 months and the batteries went dead when she replaced the batteries her files where still all intact.

If both of your battery sets have gone flat then you have lost all of your information
For your friend to have all of her info in place when she changed the batteries, the backup battery must have been OK which would have saved the info stored.
I would suggest when you use your psion to then back everything to a pc using psiwin 1.1
It's free to download from the internet.

Formated card by mistake have now lost all photos is there anyway to retrive from internal memory

If the pictures were on the memory card then they were never in the internal memory and cannot be recovered from there.

However, if you haven't done anything to the card since then, you may be able to recover at least some of the pictures. Do a Google search for "data recovery software" and select a program for your computer and operating system. Put the memory card into a card reader attached to your computer and run the program.

Psion Revo replacement restore

What do you do if you no longer have access to a Psion, but need to access some data from an old Psion backup on your PC? Native Psion files can't be read on a PC, but fortunately, there are some solutions:
  • Use the PsiWin PC connectivity suite to convert the Psion-format files to a format that can be read on the PC.
  • Download and install the Psion ER5 emulator - this gives you a Psion machine on your PC, and will allow you to access your old data on a PC - See our emulator setup page. From the emulator, you may be able to print or export your data to a text file, or use a third -party Psion converter
  • Consider borrowing or buying an old Psion machine, loading the files onto the Psion, then printing the documents or data as a text file
  • Find another friendly Psion user that may be able to convert the file into a format that can be read by a PC for you. If you don't know of another user, try asking for help in our Psion forum
also
Data conversion for the Psion can be quite complicated, due to the file formats used by Psion / Symbian. You should find that the PsiWin program supplied on CD with your Psion machine can help you with most of your conversion needs. If your PC is connected to your Psion, dragging files from "My Psion" to the PC should prompt you to convert to a PC format, otherwise you can convert files that are stored on the PC, using the Psion File Converter. This program is installed with PsiWin and is located in c:\program files\Psion\PsiWin - the application filename is Cpycnv.exe
psiwinconv.jpg For more help on file conversion, see our dedicated conversion page.
Agenda and Contacts databases: Note that these can't be converted using the Psion File Converter - PsiWin supports synchronisation of these files, but not direct conversion. See our suggestions in our Backup FAQ. The most common solution is to load up the files in the Psion Emulator, and either use Print to save the data as a plain text file, or use a Psion-based converter, as detailed on our Conversion page

I was using my Psion 5mx This evening "Playing the bombs game" when suddenly the game froze. It didn't freeze completely as the game timer was still going and I was able to switch the PDA off. After that...

Unfortuately after taking the machine to my local Psion Teklogix Retailer, I was told that my only solution wast to perform a "Hard Reset" on the machine. Thankfully the PDA still works fine, but my data is all gone. I've managed to restore my data up to July 2009, but the rest I'll have to write off to a learning experience. Needless to say, I'll never play the "Bombs game again". :-)

Psion seems quite dead although the green light and the light on the charger both light up when connected to the mains, but nothing happens on the screen. Tried changing the round battery - no effect at...

You probably already know that all the Psion 3 models had a weakness in the screen ribbon. Some would last for years and others would be lucky to see you through to the first anniversary. There are plenty of way so to get this sorted. If you are not very keen to fix it yourself then best to try and get a replacement from Ebay or a trade in form some of the companies that still deal with these machines.

Connecting Psion Series 5 with Mackintosh

MacConnect was written for MacOS 8 and was discontinued in 2002. The last version it supported was MacOS 9.

For MacOSX, use the Java Psion Link or JPL. This is platform independent and works with any java enabled OS, which is pretty much everything nowadays.

Psion 3mx connection problem

Searching Google for 'Plat 46' i found the following stuff on the Debian website (via google cache... http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:P1Yutlv9BWgJ:www3.symbian.com/faq.nsf but this may not hold good long-term as a link as the cache will change in time).
<Extracts from Debian site>:-

ESystemException=46,

Thus the reported plat:46 means ESystemException. The problem will very likely be resolved by restarting the app or the emulator.

These alert boxes shouldn't happen - they are typically associated with unexpected errors from underlying Win32 APIs, or some other indication that the emulator has got itself into a state which makes no sense in terms of EPOC: for example the EGuiStandbyWhilstOff message which happens if the emulated EPOC system is switched off while it is switched off (?!); or a needed dll is in use (being rebuilt?) when called.

</End of extracts from Debian website>

The debian page is not directly related to Psion 3 series, but there's a good chance that their error-code enumerations hold good for the message that you're seeing.

So - putting this back into the context of your failing Psion3mx connection attempt - it is likely an issue between the PsiWin software and the Win OS dll's that it is using.

Assuming that you used to be able to connect your 3mx and this problem has started happening recently. I also assume that you have already tried closing PsiWin, restarting your PC and trying again (if you haven't then try that). If you've already tried shutdown and restart and you still get the problem each time then perhaps the PsiWin software on PC needs reinstalling. Maybe a .DLL file got corrupted or deleted somehow.
I suggest you make backup copies of any data from your 3mx that is stored on your PC first though, if you decide to try reinstalling PsiWin.

As I don't know your level of experience with your Psion 3mx and PC, I am posting this purely to try and help 'shed some light' on the problem as you request. I have not had this problem with my Psion so have no 'tried and tested' answer.

Any decision on if and how to proceed in the light of this missive i've posted (and therefore any consequence of any decision) must be down to you.

Hope this helps you to figure out your connection problem and get your psion 3mx working with your pc again.

Cheers,
BB

Psion 5 fc card

The formatting is supposed to be identical on Psion and PC but in practice they are not. You should never try to repair a CF card on a PC for instance as it messes with the filesystem making it unusable on the Psion. Try to format the card on the Psion if you can, or if possible find or borrow a camera which takes CF cards and use that to format the card - that should do the trick.

Opening Psion 5 files in my PC

You need to transfer them using PsiWin - it will automatically convert the files p[roperly between PC and Psion versions.
You cannot just transfer the files via i.e. the CF card and expect them to work.

I believe versions of AbiWord can read Psion Word Processor files directly but have never tried this myself.
