Question about Hitachi (DK23BA-20) 20 GB Hard Drive

My Dell no longer reads my Toshiba EHD!!

I have a 400GB Toshiba External HD. The model is HDDR400E03X. My problem is that when I plug the EHD into the USB port, it starts up and runs fine but then the computer immediately recognizes that it is there but no longer reads it. I have used this EHD multiple times on this and other computers and now all of a sudden it won't read it nor will the PC let me access it. Can someone PLEASE help me, all my music is on this thing and I might die if I can't retrieve it!! -Corey ..I'm sure this is also useful information, I am working with a Dell Vostro 200.

Test the HD on a different computer, if you get same problem, then the disk can be faulty. Backup your data ASAP, then replace either exernal hard disk enclosure, or the hard disk drive, depending on what is faulty.

If you get no problem on other computers, then the system is causing the problem. In that case try doing a system restore to a recent date before the problem started. If that does not work, then you will have to reinstall the system.

If I understand you correctly, you want to know if you connect an external hard drive to your DISH Network receiver, can you transfer the recorded contents to your PC? If that is what you are asking, the answer is no. When you connect the EHD to your receiver, you can transfer recorded events from the receiver's HD to the EHD for extra storage and view the contents from the EHD but you can't transfer the contents from the EHD to your PC. When you plug the EHD into your PC, it will ask you to reformat the HD, which if you do reformat, you will lose all the contents on the HD. I hope this helps.

USB Connection failed? (WD 1tb My Book Essential 2.0)

Your HD may have died. This is actually a common occurrence with some external enclosures with WD hard drives installed (just do a Google search, you might be surprised how many people have had the same problem as you describe...)
Your actual HD may have SATA connections (but connects to a SATA-to-USB controller). Some people have claimed that removing the drive from the enclosure and connecting directly to SATA port on motherboard yielded a successful connection.
I wouldn't recommend this, as your drive may still be under warranty and might qualify for a free or low-cost replacement.
Your USB is likely working fine. However, the drive will not show up if it is dead. I encountered a similar issue with a WD external HD recently. USB connection gives the sense that "something" might be working, but if your drive isn't seen under disk management, there's a good chance that it may have failed.
Hopefully you have your sensitive data backed up.
Good Luck!

External Toshiba 400GB HDD not recognized on my Dell CPx J650GT

New hard drives need to be formatted! So go into the control panel switch to classic view, ( if you are still using category view for the control panel ) open administrative tools, then open computer management. Next open disk management. In disk management your new drive will show as raw, you will be give the option of formatting the drive, select primary partition and format in NTFS.
This will then format the drive, when this has finished your new drive will appear in my computer.

PS3 Does not register external hard drive

The E.H.D. might not be formated correctly. The Playstation 3 will not read any disc or hard disc if it is formatted under NTSC. It must be formatted under FAT or FAT32 ( can't remember exactly). You would need to format the E.H.D. with windows and check to see if you can format it for FAT32 if not then you need a formatting software (Max Drive or some other). Mine works great.
Good luck

My WD MyBook 500GB drive is causing Windows XP to be self-retardant. (Slows)

Heres what you do.

Don't plug your external HD in while the computer is booting up. It's looking for Windows on your external hard drive. Hence the black screen.

Plug your USB or Firewire cable back in once Windows is finished booting up.

Mine does that sometime too.

You have not yet formatted the drive to work with you MAC. You will need to use your MAC's Disk Utility to format the drive in order to write to the drive, but be aware that formatting will erase everything already on the external drive, so back up anything on the drive you want to keep first.

Power supply for Seagate 400GB

Ebay or seagate.com may be a solution.
I've used those Seagate portables and 2 have caused problems.
Or disassemble the unit, remove the drive and buy a portable case or USB adapter.
